1 year agoSource: Steam

Minimalist freeride sports game from the Norwegian two-person studio Studio Gauntlet. On procedurally generated snowy slopes, precise turns, tricks and risky obstacle sections earn points, while Zen mode allows a ride without scoring pressure. The PC version came out in 2025; native versions for PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 follow in October 2026.

What is SNØ: Ultimate Freeriding?

SNØ: Ultimate Freeriding is a minimalist downhill game from the Norwegian studio Studio Gauntlet. Instead of prebuilt racing tracks, the game continuously generates snowy mountain landscapes. If you pass close to obstacles, combine tricks and land cleanly along the way, you can raise your score.

The focus is on precise movement and short, repeatable runs, not a campaign with story missions. A run can just as easily be played as a calm exploration without score pressure.

Release

1 year agoSource: Steam

The PC version came out on Steam on Feb 17, 2025. AMATA Games, the publisher, has announced separate versions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 for Oct 28, 2026. This date appears in the international press release and on the English-language fact page.

The Japanese publisher page, by contrast, lists Oct 29, 2026 for its stores there. These regional dates should not be replaced with a supposedly uniform global date. The console ports are not a new generation: the run and its scoring logic have been the core of the game since the PC release.

Platforms

The PC version supports Windows and macOS. For the console release, AMATA confirms PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 as separate native products. A native version for the original Nintendo Switch, PS4 or Xbox One is not on the confirmed console list.

The Steam Deck rating "Verified" describes using the PC version on the handheld and is not a separate native release. Online leaderboards require network features; online races between players are not part of the described gameplay.

Gameplay

The mountains are generated procedurally. As a result, runs can bring different ridge edges, slopes and obstacles than the previous attempt. The task is to control speed and direction so that risky maneuvers don't end in a crash.

The game allows classic skiing, snowboarding and sit-skiing. These three riding styles belong to the existing system; they change how movement feels. The goal remains a controlled line balancing speed, risk and view.

System requirements

Steam lists the minimum for Windows 10 as an Intel Core i3 processor or equivalent AMD model, 4 GB RAM and 300 MB free storage. The recommended configuration lists a Core i5 or AMD equivalent, 8 GB RAM and a dedicated graphics card. An internet connection is required for leaderboards.

The Steam page also lists a macOS version for macOS 11 and later. Minimum requirements are 4 GB RAM and Apple M1 or Intel Core M. Console hardware requirements follow their own fixed platform standards.

The details apply to PC (Windows, Steam).

Points, best lists and mountain seeds

Points are awarded for tricks and close passes around obstacles, among other things. Aiming for a high rank on the leaderboards means not just pulling off risky moves, but chaining them together over one run. The developers offer both global and friends leaderboards.

Mountain setups can be shared via seeds and revisited later. Players can even open runs by the top-ranked players directly from the leaderboard, to try a different line on a familiar course.

Zen mode and free exploration

The optional Zen mode removes the points scoring. This lets you explore the same procedural snow landscape without chasing a record. It does not turn the game into a different simulation: the controls, the slope and the risk of difficult lines remain part of the experience.

The concept allows two ways to approach a run: a deliberate search for the best route, and a carefree ride into the wide open. Both use the same playing space.

Cameras, controllers and photo mode

The PC version offers keyboard and full controller support, a first-person perspective, a third-person camera and a free-floating drone camera. Photo mode lets you capture mountain views without the pressure of racing.

Steam also confirms the Steam Deck verified rating. The developers mention specific optimization for this device; however, actual frame rates depend on settings and game situations and cannot be assumed to match the console versions.

Cosmetic unlocks

More skins are unlocked through in-game achievements. They complement the three riding styles without replacing the underlying points and movement system. The official game description makes clear that mastering terrain and controls comes before collecting gear or a long progression campaign.

Single-player and online features

AMATA lists the console versions as single-player. The PlayStation Store also confirms one player. Steam does list online features and leaderboards, but its detailed description explicitly names no online multiplayer with riders on the mountain at the same time.

Leaderboards, seeds and sharing mountain sections are asynchronous ways to compare. They should not be confused with a shared live race.

Languages

For consoles, AMATA lists German on-screen text, English, French, Spanish, Japanese, Norwegian and more languages. According to Steam, the PC version also supports German in the user interface.

Check language options individually for each store and platform, rather than assuming that every language version offers the same content in every region.

Developer and publisher

The original PC game was made by the two-person Norwegian studio Studio Gauntlet, which is also listed as publisher on Steam. The later console versions are published by the Japanese company AMATA Games.

This separation of publishing roles explains why a single game can carry different publisher details and release dates on different store pages, without being several independent games.
