What is Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley?

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley is a story-driven single-player adventure by Hyper Games with publisher Raw Fury. As Snufkin, you return to Moominvalley, where the strict park warden has changed nature with fences, prohibition signs and artificial parks. The wanderer wants to remove the interventions and help the residents.

The game focuses on exploration, conversations, light stealth sections and music-based puzzles rather than a classic combat system. The world and its characters come from the Moomin stories by author and illustrator Tove Jansson; they are used in cooperation with the rights holder Moomin Characters.

Release

The first release took place on Mar 7, 2024 for Windows/macOS and Nintendo Switch. The standalone versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S were added on Dec 17, 2024. The Microsoft Store has since also offered a PC edition; that is not a seventh platform.

On Aug 6, 2025, versions for iOS and Android followed, which partner Snapbreak Games brought to mobile devices. The adventure is therefore available on six native platforms. The story itself is not told as an ongoing live service; the standalone story expansion Fuddler’s Courtship was additionally released in 2024.

Platforms

The game is available natively for PC (Windows and macOS), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS and Android. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 must be distinguished: the published product is a Switch version, not a separately confirmed native Switch 2 version. Xbox Cloud Gaming and use on compatible devices are also not additional native platforms.

According to Microsoft, the Xbox edition supports Xbox Play Anywhere for the Xbox/Windows product sold there. This does not mean purchases can be transferred across Steam, Nintendo, Sony and mobile stores in general. The platform versions should be checked as separate products.

Gameplay

Moominvalley can be explored as one connected game world. Conversations with residents, smaller tasks and observations of the environment lead Snufkin through different places. The park warden and his enforcers block paths or guard the newly built facilities.

To undo these interventions, Snufkin distracts guards, sneaks past them and removes signs or obstacles. Music and the environment become tools for solving puzzles: the harmonica helps in certain situations when contacting animals and other characters. Progress comes from exploration and combining observations, not from combat or equipment loot.

DLCs and expansions

Fuddler's Courtship is its own small story expansion from Dec 17, 2024. Snufkin and Moomin set off on a camping trip. They help the shy Fuddler in a story about affection and encounters set in an autumnal environment. The DLC adds a new narrative episode to the base game.

Cherished Keepsakes is, by contrast, a cosmetic pack, including flower decorations for Snufkin's hat and a wooden mouthpiece. The digital artbook and soundtrack are accompanying material, not additional campaigns. The respective expansions and editions must not be confused with a standalone new main game.

Music, harmonica and environmental puzzles

The harmonica is more than a storytelling prop. Snufkin uses melodies to influence certain encounters, find new paths and solve tasks in Moominvalley. Puzzles combine details of the environment with the abilities of the character. While exploring, Snufkin gathers inspiration for further musical moments.

The soundscape was created with the participation of the Icelandic band Sigur Rós; Oda Tilset also contributed her own music. The sound design carries the story without turning the adventure into a rhythm game with precise button timing.

Stories and residents of Moominvalley

The freely explorable Moominvalley is home to, according to the developer, more than 50 characters and creatures. Alongside familiar Moomin characters, Snufkin meets animals and other residents whose small stories accompany the exploration. Conversations lead to tasks and hints about how the valley has changed with the new park areas.

The visual style is based on illustrated children's books: watercolour-like backgrounds, clear character shapes and changing natural moods shape the look. The conflict between open landscapes and the rigid park rules gives the puzzles and encounters a shared framework.

Game mode, languages and subtitles

The main game is a single-player adventure, not online co-op. The Steam version offers achievements and Steam Cloud, among other things; the PS5 version allows offline play. The platform stores each list their own feature descriptions, which should not be transferred to other devices without checking.

German on-screen text and subtitles are confirmed for the PC and PS5 versions. The PlayStation Store lists English voice acting and, as an accessibility feature, basic subtitles for the main story and main characters. Full German voice acting is not listed there.

Game series

The adventure is based on the Moomin characters by Tove Jansson. Moomin Characters Oy Ltd manages the rights to the characters; Hyper Games developed the game with Raw Fury as publisher. The story captures the spirit of the books with themes such as nature, friendship and self-determination, but tells its own game conflict around the park warden.

Moomintroll: Winter’s Warmth is another standalone game from the same character universe. It is not the same as the additional episode Fuddler’s Courtship of this game.
