Release
Starfield came out on Sep 6, 2023 for PC and Xbox Series X|S. A native PlayStation 5 version followed on Apr 7, 2026. Bethesda released the PS5 version together with the major Free Lanes update and the Terran Armada story expansion.

Platforms
Native versions exist for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. Windows is offered on Steam and through the Xbox ecosystem. The PS5 version uses DualSense features and was released in 2026 as a standalone native version.

Gameplay
Starfield can be played from a first-person or third-person perspective. Players explore planets and space stations, collect resources and upgrade their gear. In space, ships can be flown, modified and equipped for different roles.
Outposts serve as permanent bases for resources, research and production. Character development combines skills with backgrounds and traits, while factions and companions open up additional quest lines.

DLCs and expansions
Shattered Space, the first major story expansion, came out on Sep 30, 2024 and takes you to Va'ruun'kai, the home world of House Va'ruun. Terran Armada followed on Apr 7, 2026 with a new story and repeatable content.
Both expansions are sold separately and are also included in certain premium bundles.

Free Lanes and free space flight
With the free Free Lanes update from Apr 7, 2026, space travel was permanently expanded. Players can now fly freely between planets within a star system in Cruise Mode and discover new space encounters and interesting places along the way.
The update also expanded gear, ships, outposts and endgame systems, and added X-Tech crafting and the Anchorpoint station, among other things.

Creations and Creation Kit
Bethesda introduced the Creations system in 2024. It lets you load additional missions, items, skins and other content directly in the game. For your own content, the official Starfield Creation Kit is also available on PC as a separate Steam download.
