What is SULFUR?

SULFUR is a first-person action roguelite from Swedish studio Perfect Random. Rather than fixed equipment, your own preparation mainly determines how the dangerous expeditions unfold. In caves, settlements, sewers and castles, players fight unusual enemies, collect loot and search for answers about the game world.

Weapon attachments, magic scrolls, consumables and cooked meals can be combined into individual builds. The game is designed around single runs with a noticeable risk of loss, not around a permanently safe loot collection.

Gameplay

Each expedition leads through hostile areas with enemies, hidden rooms and valuable equipment. Much of the tension comes from deciding how much loot to take and which items to keep safe for later attempts. If your character dies, carried equipment can be lost.

Combat combines movement-focused first-person shooting with situational preparation. According to Perfect Random, the existing selection includes more than 60 firearms. Besides guns, melee gear, protective items, cooking recipes and enchanted items shape your playstyle.

Weapon crafting and combined magic

In SULFUR, firearms can be modified with attachments, caliber changes, oils and magic scrolls. Different effects can be combined to achieve properties that a single scroll cannot.

Version 1.0 adds the Snowman Head, Water Bomb, Mud Ball, Evil Seed and Teslacold combinations. New weapon oils affect, among other things, projectile trajectories. Which combination makes sense depends on weapon, enemies and equipment.

Cooking, resources and preparation

Harvested ingredients can be turned into meals that give a tactical advantage before or during dangerous sections. Food is therefore part of your equipment decisions. Items and tools compete for scarce inventory space, while even valuable weapons are put at risk if a run goes wrong.

Preparation isn't just about maximum firepower: taking other items changes how the expedition plays out and your personal risk of loss.

World, quests and progression

The game world includes caves, a town, sewers, dungeons and a castle area, among others. Enemies, loot and secrets vary by region. Characters can give hints about the backstory.

Version 1.0 is set to complete the core progression through to the end. A new quest journal records ongoing missions directly in the game. This makes it easier to find your way in an adventure that emphasises exploration and repeated expeditions rather than straightforward mission sequences.
