What is Syberia 2?

Syberia 2 is a narrative single-player adventure from 2004. Kate Walker continues the search for the legendary last mammoths and travels with the inventor Hans Voralberg and the automaton Oscar through an increasingly inhospitable land.

The sequel picks up directly from the first Syberia. Instead of combat, the focus is on a connected story, exploring locations and understanding unusual mechanical devices.

Platforms

Syberia 2 was released for PC, PlayStation 2, the original Xbox, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch. Microids also lists historical versions for Mac and Windows Mobile. The platform versions come from different years and partly have their own control schemes.

A PS4, PS5 or Switch 2 release as a standalone native version is not part of this. The original mobile versions should also not be confused with current offers for other games in the series.

Gameplay

Syberia 2 focuses on exploration, dialogue and classic point-and-click puzzles. You examine scenes, talk to characters and use items you find in the right places. The story is linear, while individual challenges can be solved by observing and combining.

There is no open game world or tactical combat. The pace comes from the story and the obstacles Kate has to overcome along her way.

DLCs and expansions

The main story of Syberia 2 is a complete adventure. Later platform versions bring the existing game to other devices instead of adding a new story expansion.

The series' sequels are standalone games. In particular, Syberia: The World Before tells a different chapter of Kate's story.

What is the story about?

Kate Walker decides against returning to New York and for another journey with Hans Voralberg. Hans wants to find the last mammoths, which he has long dreamed of. The search takes the pair from civilized places into an ever stranger, icy world.

The story continues the relationships from the first game. Anyone who doesn't know Kate's path up to this point still understands the reason for the expedition, but misses important personal background.

Puzzles and mechanical contraptions

Many puzzles revolve around machines, switches and objects that work together. Clues come from the location, the inventory or conversations. The solutions call for attention and logical connections rather than quick reflexes.

The playful automatons fit Benoît Sokal's design of a world where historical technology and fantasy intertwine.

Snowy locations and the search for Syberia

The journey takes Kate through snowy settlements and remote landscapes. The game alternates between places inhabited by people, unusual structures and increasingly inaccessible terrain. Visual compositions and cutscenes carry the melancholic atmosphere.

Many locations contain small details that tell something about their inhabitants and also serve as clues for puzzles.

Controls and interface

The PC version is played classically with a mouse and on-screen pointer. You move Kate through fixed views and examine clickable objects. The console versions adapt selection and movement to a controller.

The Nintendo Switch version is a later port by Koalabs and not the same technical product as the 2004 PC version.

Language and German text

Syberia 2 is also playable in German. Microids lists German alongside English, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Japanese. Voice audio and on-screen text may be available to different extents depending on the edition and platform.

For the specific language combination, the respective store page is therefore decisive.

Game series

Syberia 2 directly continues Benoît Sokal's adventure game begun in 2002. The combination of machine fantasy, melancholic journey and Kate's personal development also shapes later parts.

Syberia 3 and Syberia: The World Before followed. The 2025 remaster, by contrast, covers the first part of the series and is not a remaster of Syberia 2.
