What is Terranigma?

Terranigma is an action JRPG by Quintet that first appeared in 1995 and has never been officially re-released since. It centres on Ark from the village of Crysta in the Darkside of a hollow earth. After he opens a forbidden door, he embarks on a journey closely tied to creation, destruction and the revival of the world.

The Clear River Games re-release preserves the original's 2D pixel graphics and real-time combat system, but adds a new Arranged Mode and numerous convenience features for modern platforms.

Gameplay

Terranigma combines classic JRPG progression with real-time combat. Ark fights with a spear and can use thrusts, jumping attacks and dash manoeuvres, while enemies also move in real time.

Exploration and world-building are closely tied to the story. Ark's journey leads out of the isolated Darkside into a world whose restoration and transformation form the core of the adventure.

Arranged Mode and convenience features

The new Arranged Mode changes several aspects of the original: magic deals more damage, a minimap makes navigation easier, and the save can be created at any time, independent of the original save system.

There is also Quick Magic, quick item switching, Rewind, freely assignable buttons, multiple aspect ratios and a CRT filter. A music player, a museum and high-resolution background art complement the presentation without rebuilding the core of the game.

The physical special editions are explicitly aimed at collectors; in terms of gameplay, the underlying re-release remains the same.

Game series

The original Terranigma was developed by Quintet and is one of the distinctive action RPGs of the 16-bit era. Character designer Kamui Fujiwara shaped the characters, while the game received no official re-release for over three decades until the new version.

Clear River Games Development is responsible for the modern adaptation; Clear River Games publishes it under licence from the rights holders.
