What is Terraria?

Terraria is a 2D sandbox adventure by Re-Logic, in which exploration, combat, resource gathering, crafting and building intertwine. The worlds are procedurally generated; players dig through different biomes, collect materials, craft equipment, build bases for NPCs and work their way up to ever stronger enemies and bosses.

The core is deliberately open: instead of a rigid mission sequence, progress comes from new resources, tools, weapons, areas and bosses. This way Terraria combines action RPG progression with free sandbox building.

Platforms

Terraria is natively available for PC (Windows, macOS and Linux), PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and iOS and Android. According to PlayStation, the PS4 version can also be played on PS5 via backward compatibility.

There are also historical native versions for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. These older ports are part of the game's long platform history, but they should not be equated with a separate current native PS5 or Xbox Series version.

Gameplay

Gameplay usually begins with simple tools and a small shelter, but quickly opens up into an extensive progression spiral of exploration, mining, crafting and boss fights. New materials unlock better tools, weapons, armor and building options; defeated bosses in turn change which areas and resources become relevant.

Terraria supports different playstyles: melee, ranged, magic and summoning can be specialized through equipment and accessories. Building is not just decorative, as suitable houses attract NPCs that take on vendor and service functions.

Multiplayer

Terraria can be played alone or together. On PC, the Steam version supports online co-op and PvP. On Nintendo Switch, local two-player and online matches with up to eight participants are planned; the PS4 version also supports online play with up to eight players.

Multiplayer worlds use the same basic sandbox and progression structure as single-player worlds, so exploration, boss fights and building projects can be tackled together.
