What is The Blood of Dawnwalker?

The Blood of Dawnwalker is a gloomy open-world action RPG by Rebel Wolves, set in 14th-century Europe marked by war, plague and vampires. It centres on Coen, a young man who travels through Vale Sangora as a human by day and a vampire by night.

The story revolves around saving your family and gives you a lot of freedom in the order of quests, alliances and conflicts. Decisions do not just change individual conversations; they determine which stories you can still experience in time.

Behind the debut stands a relatively compact production budget: according to a Bloomberg report published on Sep 18, 2026, NetEase provided Rebel Wolves with around $40 million in development budget and took a 26% stake in the studio. The sum relates to development and should not be equated with total project costs including marketing.

Platforms

The role-playing game is natively available for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PS5 it supports DualSense haptic feedback, among other features, and is optimised for PS5 Pro. The Xbox version supports Xbox Play Anywhere, so a digital purchase can be used on both Xbox console and PC.

A version for PS4, Xbox One or Nintendo Switch has not been announced.

Gameplay

Coen's day and night sides play out deliberately differently. As a human, he relies on swordplay and magic, while the vampire form opens up supernatural powers, claws and much more aggressive movement options. Which form is active at any given time changes abilities, enemy encounters and ways of solving problems.

Time management is especially important. Free exploration does not automatically keep the clock running, but certain quests and decisions cost time. As a result, you cannot see every side story in a single playthrough and have to weigh which characters, secrets and conflicts to prioritise. The announced New Game Plus mode is set to allow another playthrough, but details on progress carryover are still pending.

DLCs and expansions

No major story expansion has been announced so far. The separately sold Eclipse Edition Content is a digital bonus pack with a world compendium, soundtrack and comic, and not a standalone campaign DLC.

For the game's development itself, the confirmed New Game Plus mode is the main point of interest. Rebel Wolves has so far released neither a date nor concrete rules for it.

Difficulty levels and accessibility

The Blood of Dawnwalker offers different difficulty levels for combat and exploration. Rebel Wolves has announced a fifth, especially easy mode for update 1.1: the existing “Story” level will be renamed “Forgiving”, while a new Story setting provides additional combat assistance. The update is planned for the week starting Oct 19, 2026 but has not been released yet.

The announced update also includes an item called Draught of Mind Rebirth. It is meant to let Coen reset his skills in swordplay, witchcraft and vampirism and redistribute the time invested in them. This makes it possible to try out other character builds without having to restart the entire campaign. The actual way it works can only be verified with the finished update.

Rebel Wolves also plans improvements to target lock-on, combat cameras and the movement abilities Shadowstep and Planeshift. The subtitle font size is set to become adjustable, and subtitles are planned for all dialogue. Further options and exact platform dates must be confirmed by the final patch notes.
