The Escapists was released for PC and Xbox One on February 13, 2015. The PlayStation 4 version followed on May 29, 2015. Versions for Xbox 360, iOS and Android came later. The Nintendo Switch received a Complete Edition in 2018.

Items and crafting
In the prisons, you can find or craft more than 185 different items. Players combine materials into tools, trade with fellow inmates and earn money with prison jobs. Contraband must stay hidden from the guards.

An escape attempt can succeed through a self-dug tunnel, a disguise, or distracting guards. Each plan requires different tools and preparation. Which route works also depends on the layout of the prison.

Single player and sequel
The first part of The Escapists is a single-player game. The cooperative multiplayer mode belongs to the later released The Escapists 2. The Steam version of the original also offers achievements and a prison editor.
