Release
The PC version was released on Nov 29, 2023. Nintendo Switch followed on Apr 17, 2024, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on Aug 8, 2024, Xbox Series X|S on Jan 9, 2025, and iOS and Android on Mar 28, 2025.
A native Nintendo Switch 2 version was released on Aug 29, 2025. For the cinema release of the live-action film, additional anomalies were added on several platforms.

Gameplay
The core is a simple chain of rules: Don't miss any anomaly. If there is an anomaly, turn around. If there is no anomaly, keep going. Right decisions bring the player closer to Exit 8, while a wrong decision resets progress.
Tension comes from repetition, memory and pattern recognition. Many changes are deliberately subtle, so the corridor's normal state has to be learned gradually.

Anomalies and game rules
The anomalies range from obvious changes to details that only stand out once you have walked the corridor several times. The real progress therefore lies in recognising the corridor's normal state ever more reliably.

The success of The Exit 8 led to Platform 8, a standalone follow-up set on an endlessly moving train. PLAYISM also released physical double packs of both games for Switch, PS4 and PS5.
On Aug 29, 2025, a live-action film adaptation of The Exit 8 also premiered in Japan. For the cinema release, the game was expanded with new anomalies on several platforms.
