The Last Spell
The Last Spell is a tactical single-player roguelite from Ishtar Games. During the day, the defenders of a threatened city build barricades, traps and production buildings; at night, heroes hold back monster hordes in turn-based battles while mages prepare the last spell. The base game was released in 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5 and Nintendo Switch after early access.

What is The Last Spell?
The Last Spell combines turn-based tactical battles with city defence, character development and a roguelite structure. The last survivors of a magical catastrophe dig in at fortified refuges. A small group of heroes must protect the mages, who over several days prepare a spell to banish all magic.
Each day consists of two fundamentally different tasks: defending the city and equipping the party are organised in daylight, while at night the heroes must stop a numerically superior monster horde in turn-based battles. Defeats are part of the progression system, because permanent unlocks are available for later runs.

Platforms
The Last Spell was released for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. That makes four confirmed native base game versions. The developer and publisher materials explicitly list both PlayStation generations and the Nintendo console.
The three major gameplay expansions are offered on Steam as PC add-on content. Their release there does not prove separate console versions of the DLCs. Editions that bundle the base game and expansions are not new games.

Gameplay
At night, a few heroes fight enemy waves in turn-based tactical battles. Positioning, range, area attacks and how you use action points decide whether monsters reach the city. Health and mana are limited, so resources must be spread across several nights.
The game does not rely on fixed character classes. Weapons determine the available attacks, while traits, skills and equipment change the roles of the characters. Melee fighters, ranged fighters and magic-focused heroes can be combined within the same party. Equipment and enemy waves vary between runs.

DLCs and expansions
Dwarves of Runenberg (Apr 24, 2024) expands the PC game with the defence site Runenberg, dwarf heroes and new equipment. Elves of Amberwald (Apr 22, 2025) adds a forest scenario with elves and related mechanics. Both DLCs build on the base game instead of being standalone sequels.
Tales of Torment (Feb 5, 2026) introduces new challenges and reward systems. These include the additional night tasks called Ordeals, changing combat modifiers and the altar with permanent Epiphanies. The developer calls it the last of the three gameplay DLCs. The separately available original soundtrack, by contrast, is a music album without its own missions.

System requirements
Steam lists an Intel Core i5-3470 or AMD FX-8370, 4 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 650 or Radeon HD 7770 with 2 GB of graphics memory each, and 2 GB of free storage as the minimum. A Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600, 8 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7870 are recommended.
The technical list still mentions Windows 7 as the original minimum. However, the Steam client has only supported Windows 10 and newer since January 2024. An old OS listing for the game is therefore not a recommendation for the current Steam client.
The details apply to PC (Windows).

Build phase and defences
During the day phase, survivors can repair destroyed structures, build new buildings and equip the heroes. Walls, traps, watchtowers and catapults slow down enemy troops. Workshops and other economic buildings produce equipment and resources needed in later battles.
The mages and their central magic circle must survive long enough for the final spell to be completed. Every decision on production and defences uses up resources that are missing elsewhere. As a result, city management and night combat are directly linked.

Roguelite progression
A failed defence attempt ends the current run, but not all progress. Resources collected in the game unlock permanent upgrades for later runs. Hero stats, equipment and enemy waves include random elements, so new runs are never identical.
With so-called Omens you can choose certain advantages before a run. In addition, several Apocalypse difficulty levels are available. This structure is central to the gameplay and sets it apart from a tactical RPG with a fixed single campaign.

Catastrophe and last refuge
After decades of war, out-of-control spells brought about the catastrophe. A purple mist spread across large parts of the world, and altered creatures emerge from it at night. Only a few fortified settlements managed to survive.
The defenders protect the surviving mages and a magic circle, while a long-running spell is meant to remove all magic from the world. The story thus forms a lasting framing task for the changing defence scenarios and their different enemies.

Game series
The Last Spell was developed by the French studio Ishtar Games, formerly known as CCCP. The project does not belong to any existing series and combines elements of tactical RPGs, roguelite progression and city building. At the original release, The Arcade Crew was the lead publisher; current store pages also list Nacon and other regional publishers.
The music comes from Rémi Gallego, also known as The Algorithm. His soundtrack combines electronic sounds and metal elements. The separate album contains 27 tracks and is a music product that should be distinguished from the game itself and its gameplay DLCs.
