What is The Wandering Village?

The Wandering Village is a city-building and survival simulation on the back of a giant creature called Onbu. In a world overrun by toxic spores, a group of survivors builds a new home there. You lead the settlement and must also decide how to treat its living carrier.

The game combines production chains, village planning and exploration with the needs of a wandering creature. The story of Onbu and its human co-residents forms the core of the decisions.

Gameplay

On Onbu's back, you place homes, fields, workshops and other buildings. Resources and food must not only be gathered but also processed in sensible production chains and distributed. Because usable space is limited, the arrangement of buildings determines how reliably your settlement works.

As the village grows, you research technologies and unlock new options for farming, supplies and survival. Residents need food, shelter and working routes that function.

DLCs and expansions

The Last Leviathan is an announced major expansion. Instead of Onbu, the settlement is built on the sea creature Levi. Water management, new resources, plants, buildings, parasites and an adjusted research tree change the tasks.

Onbu Skin Pack, released on Dec 8, 2025, adds five alternative looks for Onbu but does not change any game mechanics. An artbook, wallpapers and soundtrack are also sold separately.

Onbu: fellow inhabitant or resource?

Onbu is more than the ground beneath your settlement: the being wanders through the world, needs food and can react to external dangers. Its health helps determine whether the village survives difficult stages. With suitable buildings and research, its needs can be observed more closely and its movements influenced.

You can try to build trust and protect Onbu, or exploit its resources more heavily. The consequences affect your relationship with the creature and therefore your inhabitants' chances of survival.

Biomes, climate and toxic spores

Onbu's migration passes through different biomes with their own temperatures, plants and dangers. What grows well in one region can fail elsewhere. Farming and supplies therefore need to suit the climate and route.

Toxic spores, parasites and extreme weather threaten both Onbu and the village. Facilities for treatment and protection against contamination become especially important on long journeys.

Resources and production chains

Wood, stone, water and other resources form the basis of the settlement. Buildings turn raw materials into food, building materials or remedies. Not every good is immediately available on Onbu's back.

Village planning depends on short transport routes, sufficient storage and the right number of workers. Later research unlocks additional buildings and processing steps.

Exploring beyond the village

Search parties leave the settlement to find rare resources and remnants of the old world in the surroundings. In this way, exploration complements production on Onbu's back.

What you can collect on the way depends on the region Onbu is currently crossing. You have to decide when an expedition is worth it and when the village's safe supply takes priority.

Research and long-term development

The research tree unlocks new buildings and technologies. Some improve familiar processes, while others open up ways to communicate with Onbu or better fend off dangers.

Research decisions affect the next expansion steps. The order can matter when scarce resources must first be invested in food, transport or protection.

Difficulty and sandbox

The Wandering Village offers adjustable difficulty options and sandbox settings. You can change the conditions of a game and focus more on planning or on surviving harsh environmental conditions.

You can save at any time. The demands rise mainly from the interplay of supplies, a changing environment and Onbu's condition.

Controls and operation

The PC version supports mouse and keyboard as well as controller. On consoles, the settlement can be managed using the adapted controller layout. The game uses menus, building views and maps to organise buildings, inhabitants and expeditions.

The Steam version offers, among other things, scalable font size and individually adjustable volume.

Art style and atmosphere

The world combines three-dimensional environments with hand-drawn and animated two-dimensional characters. While the settlement is organised from a bird's-eye view, Onbu is present as a huge wandering creature in the surrounding landscape.

The changing biomes make the journey visually easy to follow, while the settlement keeps its place on Onbu's back.
