theHunter: Call of the Wild

theHunter: Call of the Wild is a hunting simulator with open natural areas. Expansive Worlds developed the game using the Apex Engine from Avalanche Studios. Players track wild animals, explore different landscapes and plan their hunts based on tracks, wind and animal behavior.

theHunter: Call of the Wild was released for PC on Feb 16, 2017. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions followed on Oct 2, 2017. Since then, new areas and other content have been added to the game.

theHunter: Call of the Wild was released for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the console version runs through backward compatibility. PC, PS4 and Xbox One are the original releases.

Wind direction, sounds and animal tracks determine the hunt. Wild animals react to their surroundings. If you want to watch them or get close, you need to read the landscape and take their habits into account.

Hunters choose their gear based on the animal species and can unlock abilities. Weather and the day-night cycle change visibility and animal behavior. Missions and lookout points give you extra goals while you explore the hunting grounds.

New hunting grounds, companion animals and equipment expand the base game. The area Intisuyu, released in June 2026, takes you to Peru. There, mountain regions, cloud forests and jungle alternate.

Salzwiesen Park, by contrast, focuses on waterfowl and small game. Packs with specialised hunting dogs are also available.

The PC version requires at least 4 GB RAM and 140 GB free storage. 8 GB RAM is recommended. The current Steam client requires Windows 10 or later.

The original areas are Hirschfelden in Germany and Layton Lake in the Pacific Northwest of North America. The maps combine forests, fields, lakes and wetlands. Different wildlife and landscapes each require a different approach.

Later released hunting grounds open up additional regions with their own animal species, tasks and landscapes.

Up to eight people can hunt together. In multiplayer mode, you can explore the landscape together and compare hunting success. Solo play is also possible.

A DLC hunting area can be entered by the whole group if at least one player owns the corresponding expansion. Outside this shared session, your own purchase entitlement still applies.

German menus and subtitles are available, and the voice acting is in English. The PC version supports controllers and offers single-player as well as online co-op modes.
