Trailmakers is a physics-based vehicle building and sandbox game by Flashbulb. Vehicles for land, water, air and space are built from modular blocks. The current Pioneers campaign combines building, exploration and co-op.

What is Trailmakers?

Trailmakers is a physics-based vehicle building game from Flashbulb. Hundreds of modular parts are used to build cars, planes, boats, submarines, mechs and your own hybrids. Aerodynamics, weight and propulsion directly affect how your creations behave.

Since the major 2.0 update, Pioneers has been the main campaign. On Planet Gregory you complete missions, unlock new parts and build vehicles for different biomes and tasks. There are also open sandbox maps and races.

Trailmakers left Early Access on September 18, 2019 on PC and Xbox One. The PS4 version followed on May 21, 2020. Native versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S came out on December 8, 2022.

The free 2.0 update on March 6, 2025 brought the Pioneers campaign along with a new user interface and additional parts. In September 2026, version 2.5 followed together with Downtown Drive.

Platforms

The base game has native versions for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The generations are listed separately. PS5 and Xbox Series are their own native versions and not just backward compatibility entries.

On Xbox, Trailmakers supports Smart Delivery and Xbox Play Anywhere. The PlayStation Store page lists PS4 and PS5 separately and mentions DualSense vibration for the PS5 version.

Gameplay

The editor connects blocks to working vehicles. Motors, wheels, wings, lift and control surfaces can be freely combined. This means the same task can be solved with very different designs.

In Pioneers, parts are unlocked through missions and progress. The sandbox modes focus on free experimenting, community builds and racing. The current Steam listing names five special sandbox maps.

System requirements

On PC, Trailmakers requires a 64-bit Windows 10 system. Flashbulb lists an Intel Core i5-4440, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 660 and 8 GB of free storage as the minimum. A Core i7-7700K, 16 GB RAM, a GTX 1080 and 10 GB of storage are recommended.

Multiplayer and Workshop

All current game modes, including Pioneers, support multiplayer for two to eight players. Groups can build and explore together or race against each other. On PC, the Steam Workshop adds community creations to the game. The Xbox Store also has an integrated workshop for shared builds.

Major expansions

High Seas came out on Dec 10, 2021 and adds a large sea map with four island regions, wind and wave physics and new functional parts. Airborne followed on Apr 27, 2023 with a mission-based flight campaign.

On Sep 24, 2026, Downtown Drive came out. The expansion adds New Torque City with downtown, harbors, airports and suburbs, plus new vehicle templates and races.
