Ultimate Chicken Horse

Ultimate Chicken Horse is a party platform game by Clever Endeavour Games in which two to four people build obstacles together. After building, the participants must get through the same course themselves. Whoever completes the course while their fellow players fail earns points.

The original PC version of Ultimate Chicken Horse was released on March 4, 2016. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One followed in December 2017. The game came to Nintendo Switch on September 25, 2018. Later, the game was extended to further devices, including Xbox Series X|S, as well as iOS and Android versions released in 2025.

Clever Endeavour Games has been expanding the game since its original launch with new animals, blocks, levels and quality-of-life features. The mobile releases are part of the same game series and should not be confused with the sequel Ultimate Sheep Raccoon.

Ultimate Chicken Horse is available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The mobile adaptation is available as a separate iOS and Android app and supports online matches with players on other platforms.

On PlayStation 5 and Switch 2, the older console version may be usable. A separate native version cannot be derived from it.

Before each run, the participants add new platforms and obstacles together. Then everyone tries to reach the goal. Whoever completes the course while others fail can collect points.

Additional building parts create increasingly demanding routes. Not only speed but also your own course planning therefore decides the outcome of a match.

Steam lists the minimum requirements as a 1.5 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 512 MB video memory and 2 GB storage. A dual-core processor at 2.3 GHz and 4 GB RAM are recommended. Broadband internet is needed for online matches. Since 2024, the Steam client has required Windows 10 or newer.

A round begins with everyone choosing new building parts together. Players place platforms, moving obstacles and traps before all of them run to the finish flag. Points are awarded, among other things, for reaching the goal, special distances covered and successfully placed obstacles.

If everyone reaches the goal, the task is rated as too easy. This creates an unusual tension: the course must stay dangerous for the opponents without becoming impossible for its builder.

Free building lets you create, save and share courses with others. Alongside the normal party rounds, the game offers a Challenge mode: players try to complete preset or self-built levels as quickly as possible and can compare times on leaderboards.

Unlike shared building, the focus there is on running an existing course. The many block types, traps and moving parts allow very different challenges.

The party mode is the centre of the game: the group changes the course and then completes it themselves. In free building, the tools for creating your own courses take centre stage. Challenge levels, by contrast, can also be tried alone.

However, unlocking additional characters and levels requires taking part in one of the regular multiplayer modes, according to the Steam description. Ultimate Chicken Horse therefore has no equivalent standalone solo campaign.

On PC you can use a controller or keyboard. A Shared Controller mode lets you share one input device in a local multiplayer match. In addition, Ultimate Chicken Horse offers customisable rule variants and several game modes.

The core stays the same in every version: the characters must get past the obstacles set by everyone. The combination of precise jumps and strategic placement explains why the course itself becomes an essential part of the competition.

Ultimate Chicken Horse supports local and online matches with up to four players. According to the developer, players on different devices can play together via crossplay. Invites are sent via the lobby code.

The iOS and Android versions have been adapted for touchscreens. According to the official developer FAQ, they support online matches and cross-platform play. Unlike the console versions, there is no local couch multiplayer mode.

Part of the game can be tried first. Further modes are unlocked in the mobile app with a one-time in-app purchase.

Steam lists German as a supported interface language. The store lists 15 languages in total. For local matches you can use a controller or keyboard; the Shared Controller mode lets you share one input device.

The PC version includes Steam Remote Play Together, cloud saves, controller support and an editor for custom levels. Availability of these features depends on the platform.
