What is Volatiles?

Volatiles is an announced single-player top-down action roguelike. Instead of only choosing weapons and talents, players change the arena itself during a survival run. From an initial floor tile, a new room structure grows with each level-up, in which you can fight alien enemies.

The division of the area is part of the strategy: wide passages create escape routes, narrow corridors can funnel enemies. The developer is Team Instant Defeat, the publisher 11 bit studios.

Platforms

So far, a Windows PC version via Steam is confirmed. The product page published on the store lists no native versions for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, macOS or Linux. Controller support on Windows does not mean that there is a console version at the same time.

The title can be added to the Steam wishlist, but has not yet been released. Information on other systems, crossplay or a specific Steam Deck verification is not confirmed.

Gameplay

Volatiles combines dodging growing enemy groups with targeted shots, upgrades and buildable room sections. Experience points gained lead to new choices, where additional attacks are not the only deciding factor: a new tile can also narrow the terrain or create escape routes.

The game shows combat in a dark pixel graphic style. The official images show projectile attacks, energy effects and the user interface with equipment and mission objectives. The final balance or length of a run is not yet confirmed before release.

Arena tiles as a tactical system

Each run starts on a single tile. After level-ups, players choose further room sections that connect directly to the existing combat area. Some open up space to dodge, others create narrower passages. This changes the movement options of your own character as well as those of the attackers.

The tile choice is therefore more than map decoration. It can provide new items, tools, defences, healing or weapons, and at the same time determines where upcoming fights take place. How different combinations work together has yet to be tested in practice.

Weapons, upgrades and combinations

The official material shows, among other things, an unlock menu with a branching progress structure, electric attacks and a tile selection that includes a mine as a possible addition. According to the developers, weapons, enhancements and defensive options can be combined into different builds.

A distinction must be made between unlocks within a run and long-term progression. The final scope of the arsenal and specific unlock costs have not yet been officially documented.

What remains after a lost run

A failure sends the character back into a water-filled sensory deprivation tank. The game does not simply restart there: it plans new abilities and lasting unlocks between runs. The exact nature of the progression is described in the store, and individual upgrade levels may still change before release.

The roguelike core lies in trying again with a different sequence of arena and equipment choices, not in a fixed level map that would just have to be memorised.

The laboratory behind the fights

The character wakes up without clear memories in a secret laboratory. The people holding her there speak of a treatment. In the mental combat zones, however, she encounters something called Mold. Between runs, fragments of the backstory can be discovered.

The laboratory setting and the combat arenas are thus two layers of the same story. Whether the statements of the observers there are accurate is, according to the product description, part of the game's secret; a narrative outcome has not been publicly confirmed.

Single player and input

Steam lists single player as a supported game mode. A co-op or competitive online mode has not been announced so far. The store lists full controller support, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers; this is an input note for the PC version, not confirmation of separate console releases.

Languages and accessibility

Steam lists seven supported languages. German menu text and subtitles are announced, while full voice audio is listed for English only. The store page also cites adjustable volume sliders as an accessibility feature.

Further options such as freely configurable difficulty levels or specific subtitle settings are not confirmed by the current store listing and are therefore not assumed.

Team Instant Defeat and 11 bit studios

Development is handled by Team Instant Defeat, a small, distributed independent team. Publishing is handled by 11 bit studios, the company behind Frostpunk and This War of Mine. Based on current information, Volatiles is a standalone game brand and neither a Frostpunk expansion nor a sequel to an existing 11 bit title.

The collaboration was made public for the presentation in October 2026.
