What is Warcraft III: Reforged?

Warcraft III: Reforged is Blizzard's remake of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne. The real-time strategy game combines classic base economy, hero units and large campaigns with modern Battle.net matchmaking and a still-usable World Editor.

The focus is on the conflicts between humans, orcs, night elves and undead. The campaigns tell pivotal chapters of Azeroth's backstory and lead through, among other things, Arthas' fall, the rise of the Scourge and the battles over Kalimdor. Since September 2026, the new campaign Forsaken Kingdom has officially continued this story for the first time in more than two decades.

Platforms

Warcraft III: Reforged is natively available for PC and Mac via Battle.net. A standalone console version is not part of the current release plans.

Blizzard's current product listing also mentions access via Xbox Game Pass for linked accounts. This does not change the native platform: the game is still played via the Battle.net desktop app on your PC.

Gameplay

Warcraft III remains a classic real-time strategy game with base building, resource gathering, armies and powerful heroes. Units do not level up permanently, while heroes gain experience, learn abilities and carry items. Alongside the story campaigns, Reforged offers competitive multiplayer, custom games and the World Editor.

With Update 3.0, group selection was expanded from 12 to 24 units. Forsaken Kingdom leans more toward RPG in its main campaign: after a linear four-mission prologue, the structure opens up, heroes gain additional equipment slots and talents, and exploration plays a bigger role.

Warcraft III: Reforged is part of the Warcraft series and tells the direct backstory of many later events in World of Warcraft. Forsaken Kingdom closes a gap that was largely left open between Arthas' return to Lordaeron and the rise of the Forsaken.

The new campaign also serves as a narrative bridge to World of Warcraft: Forever. There the story picks up shortly after the events of Forsaken Kingdom, before Azeroth's next era begins.
