Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger is a space combat simulator developed by Origin Systems in 1994. As pilot Christopher Blair, you fly missions against the Kilrathi, and your decisions shape a story told through elaborately filmed cutscenes. A reworked PC edition with restored film footage is announced, but not yet dated.

What is Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger?
Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger combines a single-player campaign full of space battles with a science fiction story filmed in live action. The Terran Confederation is at war with the Kilrathi Empire. You take on the role of Christopher “Maverick” Blair and fly dangerous missions as a pilot, while the story continues between missions through briefings, conversations and film scenes.
Mark Hamill plays Blair. The cast also includes John Rhys-Davies and Malcolm McDowell. The game was made by Origin Systems and first released in 1994 under Electronic Arts. Unlike a pure film adventure, it requires you to actively fly fighters, complete mission objectives and make your own combat decisions.

Release
The original PC release dates to 1994. Retailers give different exact calendar dates. As long as these differ, only the year is deliberately given here.
The classic version is still available digitally. GOG sells a DRM-free version prepared with DOSBox and maintains it in its Preservation Program. In November 2024, GOG checked compatibility with Windows 10 and 11, among other things, and adjusted the DOSBox configuration. Electronic Arts also includes the classic in its PC offering via the EA app.

Platforms
The original release came out on PC. Today the classic is listed for Windows via GOG and the EA app. GOG also lists macOS as a supported system for its remastered store version. This is not a separate native Mac release from 1994.
For the announced 30th Anniversary Edition, Steam, GOG and the EA app were named as PC distribution channels. A console version of this new edition was not confirmed at the reveal. The historical 3DO and PlayStation release must not be confused with a current native PS5 or Xbox Series version.

Gameplay
In missions, you fly different fighters from the cockpit view. Radar, targeting, weapon and shield displays are part of active flight control. Before missions, you can adjust your ships and their weapons for tasks such as interception or attacks on larger targets. The classic version offers five different fighter models with configurable equipment.
The campaign is not just a fixed sequence of film scenes: mission progress and conversation choices affect the path through the story. GOG describes more than 50 combat scenarios. It is played alone, not in online co-op or a competitive multiplayer mode.

System requirements
For the Windows version currently offered by GOG, the store lists Windows 10, a 1.8 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, a DirectX 9.0c-compatible 3D graphics card and 2 GB free storage as minimum requirements. The classic DOS version runs there via DOSBox.
The older EA product page lists different historical minimum requirements for Windows XP to Windows 7. These must not be equated with the requirements of the not yet released Anniversary Edition. No confirmed PC specifications are available for this new edition.
The details apply to pc.

Full-motion video as a core game element
Over the course of the campaign, Wing Commander III relies on more than three hours of filmed footage. Decisions and conversations between flight missions give the characters weight and connect the battles to an ongoing story.
The announced re-release, according to a publicly documented presentation, draws on rediscovered source material from the recordings. This must be distinguished from simply upscaling already compressed video files: the surviving masters offer a different starting point for restoration. What the finished sequences will look like must be shown in a published version.

Announced 30th Anniversary Edition
At the Portland Retro Gaming Expo in October 2026, EA producer Jim Vessella showed plans for a revamped PC release. The slide, documented by visitor Steve Lin, lists original and upscaled versions of the master footage, controller support, gameplay at up to 60 frames per second and the integration of a Community Enhancement Patch.
Steam, GOG and the EA app are listed as sources. The item “Kilrathi Saga Integration” was not explained further, so it does not confirm that all earlier parts are included as a game bundle. A release date and the minimum technical requirements for this edition are not known. The 1994 version already on sale and the announced anniversary edition should be treated as different product versions.

Game series
Wing Commander III continues the story of the space combat series about the conflict between humanity and the Kilrathi Empire. Its distinguishing feature within the series is the large-scale cutscenes filmed with actors and the closer link between decisions made in conversation and missions in space.
The original production was developed by Origin Systems and published by Electronic Arts. For the newly announced edition, EA producer Jim Vessella talks about preparing the original material. The presentation mentions a “Kilrathi Saga Integration”, but so far explains neither its exact technical scope nor any possible package contents.
