Gameplay

The Chaos Trials demand quick reactions. Between ordinary enemies, tough mid-bosses and the members of the Magic Council, dodging, short attack windows and switching between spells become decisive.

Rooms change from run to run. After a defeat, a new trial begins. This makes experimenting with different playstyles a central part of the game.

Elements and spell combinations

Over a hundred spells can be unlocked. They range from ranged attacks and fast melee techniques to abilities that make movement or controlling enemies easier. Your chosen repertoire determines which combinations work in combat.

A strong build combines matching ranges, cooldowns and defensive options. A single powerful spell does not replace the interplay of abilities.

Relics and progress

Relics change stats and combat abilities and add to your chosen spell repertoire. During a trial, new items can significantly change your previous strategy.

Between runs, the selection of possible spells and relics expands. However, the order in which you find items remains unpredictable.

Local co-op and duels

Two players can play the Chaos Trials together in local co-op. Different spells can be coordinated with each other. One character can hold enemies in place while the other deals damage from a safe distance.

There is also a local duel mode. Integrated online co-op is not among the confirmed main features of the original release.

Structure of the Chaos Trials

The path through the Trials leads through randomly assembled rooms with enemies, special encounters and boss fights. Different elemental attacks force changing tactics. Mobility is often more important than simply surviving individual hits.

The challenge does not end with a fixed level sequence. Even after several runs, routes and possible equipment change.

Pixel art and pace of play

The two-dimensional pixel art shows magic effects, enemy movements and arenas from a top-down view. This keeps positioning and dodge routes central even in fast fights.

The game differs clearly from turn-based fantasy RPGs. Here spells are chained in real time and mistakes are punished immediately.

Dale North composed the soundtrack for the game. The music supports the fast combat pace and the different magical locations. A digital soundtrack is sold separately. It contains music, but no playable levels or spells.
