A Fisherman’s Tale is a puzzle adventure developed exclusively for virtual reality by the French studio InnerspaceVR, produced with ARTE France and published by Vertigo Games. You step into the role of Bob, a small wooden fisherman puppet. While a storm is brewing outside, Bob must light his lighthouse. But the familiar hut turns out to be part of an astonishing construction: in the room stands a model of the same lighthouse, in which a smaller version of Bob moves. At the same time, an even larger copy exists outside your room.
Puzzles with nested size worlds
The special gameplay uses these nested worlds as a tool. If you reach for an object in the model in your hut, the situation changes in other size levels: what is a huge obstacle in one world becomes a handy item in another. You pick up things, combine them, move parts and work out seemingly impossible paths through the interlocking spaces. The puzzles don’t rely on time pressure or fighting, but on playful changes of perspective and on understanding the relationships between the different miniature worlds.
An interactive fairy tale for VR
With quirky side characters, colorful wooden puppet scenes and a story about memories and reality, A Fisherman’s Tale combines a physics-like thought experiment with a personal, fairy-tale adventure. The controls are designed for VR controllers and spatial grabbing: objects can be examined, placed in other positions or worked on with tools. The game is designed for one player and does not work as an ordinary screen game without a compatible VR headset. The sequel A Fisherman’s Tale 2, formerly Another Fisherman’s Tale, is by contrast a standalone, different game.
Standalone VR on Meta Quest
The standalone-playable Quest version arrived in the Oculus Quest Store on Nov 27, 2019. Unlike the PC VR version, it requires no powerful gaming PC and no cable: the headset runs the game itself, and with the included controllers you can directly manipulate the nested lighthouse worlds. The mission, the puzzles about size ratios and Bob as the main character correspond to the original game. The Meta Quest Store app is a separate native release.
