Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss also came out on the original PlayStation on Mar 14, 1997. This console version, developed by Infinity Entertainment, was published by Electronic Arts Victor exclusively in Japan. It carries the original Japanese disc code SLPS-00742 and is not identical to the later Windows version on Steam or GOG.
You control the Avatar, who is wrongly accused of kidnapping Baron Almric’s daughter and banished to the dangerous underground world of the Stygian Abyss. In first-person view, you explore vast dungeons, talk with their inhabitants, solve puzzles and fight monsters. Skills, items, food and magic are important for survival.
Technically adapted for PlayStation: Unlike the DOS version, the game uses polygonal characters and enemies, a reworked full-screen display with a separate inventory, new cutscenes and changed music. The controls were redesigned for the PlayStation controller. The official disc was sold only with Japanese on-screen text and menus; later fan translations are not an official language version.
The purchase is the historical Japanese PS1 disc or a collector’s item. A standalone, officially available digital PlayStation key or a newly released PSN version is not confirmed.
