DOOM 3 for the original Xbox is the standalone console version of id Software’s horror first-person shooter. The version co-developed by Vicarious Visions was released in 2005 and sends you in as a marine through the dark corridors of a research facility on Mars. After a failed teleportation experiment, demons overrun the Union Aerospace Corporation station. Flashlight, scarce ammo, ambient sounds and the oppressive lighting shape the campaign.
Unlike the original PC edition, the Xbox version has a specially adapted two-player co-op campaign via System Link or the Xbox Live service of the time. Historically, multiplayer matches were also possible. The Limited Collector’s Edition added The Ultimate DOOM, DOOM II, a concept gallery and background material; it is a bundled variant of this Xbox game, not a standalone spin-off.
Activision announced the American release on April 4, 2005; in Europe the original Xbox version came out on April 8, 2005. This 2005 edition should be distinguished from the technically revised DOOM 3: BFG Edition and the port released for Xbox One in 2019. Historical original Xbox offers generally refer to the physical game and not a modern Xbox One download code.
