What is Backrooms: Escape Together?

Backrooms: Escape Together is a survival horror game for one to six players. From a first-person perspective you explore endless, eerie building hallways, search for items and exits, and try to evade dangerous creatures. The yellow rooms of Level 0 kick things off.

Developer Triiodide Studios combines the Backrooms idea with shifting room sequences, puzzles, spatial sound and shared escape. An elevator mishap leaves a research team stranded in this labyrinth.

Gameplay

Every expedition begins with searching for clues, useful items and the next exit. The rooms change from attempt to attempt. The positions of objects and encounters with creatures can shift, so memorized routes don't reliably lead to the goal.

The individual levels combine exploration, environmental puzzles and avoiding danger. Depending on the situation, you decide whether to keep investigating, hide or look for an alternative route with your team.

Co-op with up to six people

Up to six players can escape the Backrooms together. Alternatively, the rooms can be explored alone. Private lobbies allow games with friends, public lobbies allow play with others.

The spatial voice chat takes distance and surroundings into account: voices get quieter when group members move apart or walls lie between them. Staying together is therefore important for coordinating the search for ways out.

Eleven shifting levels

Eleven procedurally built levels make up the game world. They differ in room architecture, puzzles, items and dangers. Hallways, rooms and transitions are assembled differently with each new attempt.

The game uses realistic visuals with recurring, seemingly abandoned everyday locations. The uncertain sequence of rooms is part of the horror: even familiar areas can feel different on the next run.

Creatures and their behaviors

The creatures don't all react to the same stimuli. Some encounters call for caution and observation before you find a safe route. Their different search behavior forces you to watch the environment, not just your own running speed.

Enemies, their positions and possible escape routes change along with the procedural environments. This creates new risky situations, even in familiar areas.

Graphics and sound

Unreal Engine 5 brings the Backrooms to life with realistic lighting and detailed interiors. Alongside the almost everyday building areas, spatial audio means sounds and voices hint at dangers and fellow players.

The Xbox Series version lists 4K, ray tracing and a frame rate of more than 60 FPS as supported features. Whether individual effects are available at the same time depends on settings and the console.

Controls and accessibility

The PC version offers full controller support and, according to Steam, does without quick-time events. In addition, there are adjustable audio levels, options for color distinguishability and camera comfort.

On PS5 you can adjust stick sensitivity and inversion, among other things. Motion sensing, touch controls, haptic vibration and adaptive triggers are not required for basic operation.

Development and inspiration

Triiodide Studios develops and publishes Backrooms: Escape Together itself. The story picks up the online-born Backrooms idea of seemingly endless, empty interior spaces.

The game does not tell a continuous film plot. The focus is on repeated exploration and the shared search for a way out of the labyrinth.

Together across platforms

The Xbox Series version supports cross-platform online matches. The developer announced crossplay for the console launch on Jun 18, 2026. Shared matches require current versions, online access and the relevant console subscriptions.

The in-game voice chat works with the distance between characters, so it plays an important role in communication even in mixed groups.

Game series

Backrooms: Escape Together is an independent take on the Backrooms concept. It combines the familiar empty, surreal rooms with multiplayer horror and shifting mazes.

Other games with 'Backrooms' in the title partly come from other studios. They have no automatic storyline connection simply because of the shared setting motif.
