Release

The full version of Brawlhalla released on PC on Oct 17, 2017; the PlayStation 4 version followed or came out later that same year. Xbox One and Nintendo Switch were added on Nov 6, 2018. Ubisoft released the native iOS and Android apps on Aug 6, 2020.

The versions belong to the same cross-platform game. New characters, crossover costumes and extra game modes do not make a separate sequel.

Platforms

Brawlhalla was released separately for Windows/macOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The mobile versions are separate apps, not streaming of the PC version. Crossplay connects them with the console versions.

The official website also lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as supported devices. That alone does not prove a separate native release; playing via backward compatibility is not a new platform version.

Gameplay

Brawlhalla decides fights with knockouts from the arena. With each hit, it becomes harder to return to the platform. Jumps, dodges, aerial attacks and clinging to stage edges help you recover. Weapons can be picked up and thrown during a match.

Players who read their opponent's reach and attack pauses instead of mashing buttons can punish attacks precisely. The game is easy to pick up, but competitive play demands precise timing.

Legends and two weapon styles

Each legend combines its own traits and special attacks with two available weapon types. As a result, weapons you find change not only reach but also movement options and possible combos. Switching characters during a match is not necessary for this.

The roster includes original characters from fantasy and science fiction, as well as collaborations with other brands. Not every guest fighter has a fully original moveset: some crossover appearances are based on an existing legend.

Cross-progression without merging accounts

Existing accounts can be linked for cross-platform progress. One selected active account can carry experience points, ranked rating and certain unlocks over to another device. Name and friends list depend on the platform currently in use.

When inventory is shared, items stay on their original account. They also become accessible while the relevant link is active; linking does not permanently copy all purchases into a single account.

Touch controls and controllers on mobile devices

The standalone iOS and Android versions support a customizable touchscreen button layout. According to Ubisoft, players can alternatively use a controller. Online matches against other platforms were already available at the mobile launch.

PC and consoles rely on their respective input devices. The shared combat mechanics remain intact, even though controls in pocket format differ noticeably from a keyboard or gamepad.

Free game and optional add-ons

The base game can be played without a purchase. Legends can be unlocked in the game; the separately sold All Legends Pack unlocks on Steam both the current roster and future regular legends. It does not replace the main game and is not necessary to get started.

Other optional content is mainly cosmetic skins and crossover appearances. A costume pack is neither a native platform release nor a standalone playable sequel.

PC system requirements and language

On Steam, the minimum for Windows is listed as 2 GB RAM and 800 MB storage. Recommended are 4 GB RAM, about 2 GB of space and a broadband connection. A macOS version is also listed, with its own minimum operating system requirements.

The interface can be used in German, English, French and Japanese, among others. Steam does not list full German voice audio. For online matches, a reliable network connection matters more than the comparatively low hardware requirements.

Blue Mammoth Games and Ubisoft

Blue Mammoth Games from Atlanta initially developed Brawlhalla independently and released the full version in 2017 after several test phases. In 2018, Ubisoft acquired the studio, and it is still listed as the game's publisher.

Long-term support brought more legends, game modes and platform versions. Despite the many add-on packs, Brawlhalla remains a single free-to-play core game with cross-platform matches.

Ranked play, team fights and free rooms

In ranked mode, players compete solo or in teams, including 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 matches. Alongside free fights and private rooms, there are variant modes such as Capture the Flag, Volleybrawl and Horde.

On Steam, online PvP, local multiplayer, cooperative modes and Remote Play Together are listed. This makes the fighting game suitable both for competitive ranked play and for a shared session on the same device.

Game series

The game's focus is the battle of the legends in Valhalla. The game's own world mixes characters from different eras and fantasy genres with guest appearances from film, TV and other games. This leaves room for new costumes and guest fighters without changing the basic arena rules.

The regular Brawlhalla forms the core. Character packs and seasonal cosmetics are add-ons, not separate main games.
