Release

The first Akumajō Dracula was released in Japan in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System. The NES version followed in 1987 in the US and in 1988 in Europe. In 1993, Konami also released a Famicom cartridge version; this version was re-released in 2026 as a mobile app for iOS and Android.

Platforms

The original release launched on the Famicom Disk System; later versions followed, including Famicom and NES versions. Since Sep 25, 2026, the 1993 Famicom version has also been available as a standalone app for iOS and Android. On modern consoles and PC, the game is also part of the Castlevania Anniversary Collection.

Gameplay

Castlevania is a linear 2D action game with precise jumps, enemy waves and boss fights. Simon Belmont uses his whip as his main weapon and finds additional weapons and items along the way. The path leads section by section deeper into Dracula's castle.

Mobile version from 2026

For the 40th anniversary, Konami released the 1993 Famicom version on Sep 25, 2026 as an iOS and Android app. The app is a direct port with on-screen controls and works offline. The download was initially offered free until Oct 24, 2026; according to the publisher, anyone who downloaded the app in this period can keep downloading and playing it afterwards.
