What is Dead by Daylight?

Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical online horror game from Behaviour Interactive. A match pits four survivors against a single opponent. The survivors repair generators, open the exit gates and try to escape together, while the other side tries to prevent their escape.

The core principle has been kept since the PC launch in 2016, but it has been expanded over the years as a live service. New characters, maps, perks and chapters add to the core without replacing the role split of the main mode.

Gameplay

Survivors play in third-person perspective and must repair several generators to activate the exit gates. Teamwork, healing, distraction and reading the map matter more here than direct confrontation.

The opposing side plays in first-person perspective and hunts the group with an ability of its own. Both roles collect Bloodpoints and invest them in perks, add-ons and other progression options in the Bloodweb. This creates different builds, even though the basic goal of each match stays the same.

DLCs and expansions

Dead by Daylight expands its asymmetric horror game with its own characters and licensed chapters. Depending on the release, killers, survivors, maps and new abilities are added. Licensed content may later leave sale, without characters already unlocked becoming unplayable.

The Chucky chapter will be removed from platform stores on Nov 24, 2026. Chucky characters and outfits that are already unlocked remain usable, including in 2v8 mode. The three abilities will be offered to other players under new names as general killer perks. No new Chucky outfits will be released after that.

Cross-play and cross-progression

Cross-play connects PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. The feature was introduced in 2020 and later expanded to include current console versions.

Live service and chapters

New chapters regularly expand Dead by Daylight with original characters and collaborations with well-known horror brands. This mainly changes the selection of roles, abilities and locations, while the asymmetric 4-vs-1 base game remains intact.

Behaviour also uses time-limited modes and experiments, but separates these from the permanent core. What matters most, therefore, are the long-term available characters, chapters, maps and systems.
