What is Door Kickers: Action Squad?

Door Kickers: Action Squad is a side-scrolling SWAT action game in pixel art. In Nowhere City, players break into buildings, stop armed enemies, rescue hostages and defuse bombs. Each mission demands quick decisions: use cover, reload in a controlled way and open the next door at the right moment.

The game was developed by PixelShard and KillHouse Games. It can be played alone or with a second person on PC and consoles.

Door Kickers: Action Squad released on Sep 10, 2018 for PC. The Xbox One version followed on Oct 23, 2019, the PlayStation 4 version on Oct 24, and the Nintendo Switch version on Oct 28, 2019. In 2020 the game also came out for iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Door Kickers: Action Squad was released for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. On Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox One version is playable; a standalone Xbox Series or Switch 2 version is not included.

The smartphone versions use controls adapted to touchscreens. On PC, keyboard and controller can be used.

Gameplay

Each mission is a compact 2D operation with hostages, explosives or enemy groups. The route through a building is set, but the order of actions remains decisive. Whoever runs into a room carelessly or reloads at the wrong moment often has to start over.

Defeated enemies yield strategic points. These let the squad receive healing and resupply on the go or trigger a particularly powerful ability.

Professionals Abroad is an additional mission expansion. A digital soundtrack and an artbook are also available. This content is separate from the main game; the Deluxe Edition bundles several products.

For the game itself, Steam lists a minimum of a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, a DirectX 9.0c graphics card with 128 MB video memory and 100 MB of free storage space. The original specifications date from the era of older Windows versions. The current Steam client requires Windows 10 or later.

Six operatives and their abilities

Six playable character classes differ in weapons, combat style and upgradable abilities. Players unlock new options as they progress and can tailor how an operation plays out to their chosen character. There are also more than 60 weapons and items of equipment.

Missions and additional game modes

The main game has 84 levels with different mission objectives. Endless Tower continues the operations without a regular ending, while Zombie Invasion mode brings a different enemy type and therefore a changed combat rhythm into the game.

Solo or two-player co-op

On PC and consoles, two people can play together. The game supports local co-op and online co-op. On Steam, split screen and Remote Play Together are added. Online matches on Nintendo Switch require Nintendo Switch Online, and on PlayStation 4 PlayStation Plus.

Level editor and community content

The PC version includes a level editor and supports the Steam Workshop. This lets players create their own mission areas and use additional community missions.

German text and controls

On PC and consoles, German on-screen text is available. The English voice-over remains the only spoken language on Steam. The PC version supports controllers, while iPhone, iPad and Android are designed for touch controls.
