Gameplay

Ecstatica centers on survival in the village of Tirich. The player character searches for clues, investigates houses and paths, and solves puzzles while dangerous creatures roam the village. Combat is possible, but it isn't always the best answer to an encounter.

The game explains very little with modern on-screen indicators. Fixed camera angles and figuring out connections shape the flow more than map markers or quest lists.

The story of Tirich

The young Ecstatica lies in a deep trance, and her dreams threaten the villagers. A traveler is drawn into these events by chance and must find out what lies behind the attacks.

A dangerous werewolf hunts the player character. The story combines classic horror figures and medieval fantasy elements with often bitter humor.

Why the characters look so unusual

Ecstatica uses ellipsoids instead of conventional polygon models as the basis for its three-dimensional characters. This gives humans and monsters their rounded, organic-looking shapes. Backgrounds and camera angles are tailored to this unique graphics style.

The technology was already striking in 1994 and remains one of the game's most important trademarks today.

Three graphics modes

The PC remaster offers three display variants. DOS mode is based on the original release, Windows 95 mode on a later version. There is also a software mode, which displays the graphics at higher resolutions.

You can switch between these modes during play. Additional options restore certain historical graphical features.

Encounters and replay value

Enemies and encounters can vary between playthroughs. As a result, routes through Tirich don't always play out the same way. Despite the horror atmosphere, the game also includes absurd and surprising situations.
