Gameplay

Regular battles run turn-based with up to six active characters. Characters have different roles, ranges and abilities, so the choice of formation shapes important fights. Besides these group encounters, there are staged one-on-one duels as well as larger battles with several units. These battle types set different priorities than the normal party system.

The game deliberately combines the structure of a classic JRPG with modern rendered backdrops and two-dimensional sprite characters. The core remains planning abilities, formation and resources, not real-time action.

Recruit over 100 characters

The over 100 recruitable heroes are not all part of the active battle group at the same time. Some join after narrative encounters, others only after smaller tasks or specific conditions. Some support the headquarters and its facilities instead of taking part directly in battles.

The search for new allies is therefore tied to exploration and progress in the game world. The central battle formation is limited to six characters. The large number of recruitable characters therefore does not mean an equally large group you can control at the same time.

Headquarters and upgrades

Your own headquarters is more than a meeting place for the hero group. Newly recruited allies help there with upgrading buildings, production sites and services. Additional facilities open further options for supply and development, while the fortress grows as the story progresses.

Activities outside the campaign include mini-games and side quests. Upgrades link recruitment with lasting improvements to infrastructure, without replacing the turn-based main campaign itself.

Story and the region of Allraan

The events take place on the continent Allraan, where various states, groups and interests struggle for power and ancient magical artifacts. At the center are Nowa, a young fighter from the Liga, as well as Seign from the Galdean Empire and Marisa, who belongs to the Wardens. Their paths show different perspectives on a widening conflict.

The story links personal loyalties and rivalries with the political conflict between the powers. The many other heroes expand this view of Allraan with their own backgrounds and tasks.

Languages and accessibility

The PC version supports German menus and German subtitles. Full voice acting is available in English and Japanese according to Steam. The Steam features list adjustable difficulty, separate volume controls, a way to play without quick-time events and keyboard-only controls. Controllers are partially supported.

Steam rates the PC version on Steam Deck as “Playable”. This compatibility is not a native additional platform, nor a statement that all controls work without adjustment.

Game series

Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising was already released on May 10, 2022 and, as a standalone, action-oriented companion game, tells a prequel story on the same continent. It uses a different combat system than Hundred Heroes, but picks up places and themes from the later story.

Hundred Heroes was developed with participation from former Suikoden developers, but legally and narratively belongs to the standalone series Eiyuden Chronicle. The two Eiyuden games therefore should not be grouped together as different editions of the same product.
