Evil Dead: The Game

Evil Dead: The Game is an asymmetric horror action game from Saber Interactive. Four humans try to push back the Kandarian Demon and close a portal to the underworld. The fifth player can take control of the demon, set traps and hunt the survivors.

The game combines the films The Evil Dead, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness with characters and locations from the TV series Ash vs Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell voices several versions of Ash Williams.

Evil Dead: The Game was released on May 13, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The original PC version was published on the Epic Games Store. On April 26, 2023, the Steam version followed at the same time as the Game of the Year Edition.

The announced Nintendo Switch version was cancelled on September 19, 2023. In April 2025, the game began to be removed from digital stores.

The game was released for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. On Xbox, the console versions support Smart Delivery. PS4 and PS5 are also taken into account as separate hardware generations.

A Nintendo Switch version was never released. Saber Interactive stopped its development in 2023.

Since 2025, the game is no longer regularly sold in the major digital stores. The originally released versions therefore remain historically distinct platform versions.

In the main game mode, four survivors search for map pieces, collect supplies and work through several ritual steps to send the Kandarian Demon back. They have to coordinate melee weapons, firearms and healing items.

The other side controls the demon. It can summon enemies, possess objects, scare other characters and, with growing power, even temporarily control humans. This creates a race between shared goals and the growing threat.

The Game of the Year Edition was released on April 26, 2023 and bundled content from six DLC packs. This includes additional survivors, demons and cosmetic items.

The expansion Who's Your Daddy brought Brock Williams and the demon Baal, known as the Schemer. Further packs add characters and costumes from Army of Darkness, Evil Dead 2013 and Ash vs Evil Dead. Development of new game content ended in 2023.

The PC version lists Windows 10 (64-bit), 8 GB RAM and 12 GB free storage space as minimum requirements. It also lists an Intel Core i5-7400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1400, and a GeForce GTX 1060 with 6 GB or Radeon RX 580 with 8 GB. DirectX 12 and a broadband connection are also required.

Recommended: 16 GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-7700 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, and a GeForce GTX 1070 Ti or Radeon RX 5600 XT.

The four survivors share found equipment and mark locations and items for the team. One character can focus on combat, healing or support. Anyone who runs off alone into the woods is easier for the demon to track down and isolate.

The group protects the Necronomicon and step by step shuts down the demons' access. To do this, players have to make decisions under pressure about equipment, routes and joint fights.

On the other side, one player hunts the survivors as the bodiless Kandarian Demon. They can summon Deadites, activate traps, take over trees and vehicles and control enemy characters with special abilities.

Different demon classes change the focus. The Warlord uses powerful units and traps, the Puppeteer relies more on possession and the Necromancer on larger groups of undead servants.

The fear meter affects how easily the demon can find and attack the survivors. Gunshots, car rides and longer periods in darkness increase the risk of being detected. Light sources such as campfires help to reduce fear.

A very high fear level makes people more susceptible to demonic possession. The group therefore has to not only collect supplies but also keep an eye on the condition of their teammates.

You can play as different incarnations of Ash Williams as well as well-known characters such as Kelly Maxwell, Pablo Simon Bolivar, Scotty, Cheryl Williams and Lord Arthur. Some of the original actors also voice their roles in the game.

The lineup includes characters from several films and the series Ash vs Evil Dead. They differ in classes, abilities and perks for teamwork.

The maps feature well-known locations from the films and series. These include the forest cabin from the first two films, Ash's trailer and his yellow Delta 88. The surroundings are big enough for exploring, scavenging for supplies and taking detours.

Later, Castle Kandar added an extra location from Army of Darkness. The landscape, vehicles and buildings are all part of the hunt, because the demon can interact with them.

Beyond the asymmetric four-versus-one mode, there are single-player missions as well as a game option with computer-controlled companions. The multiplayer mode supports crossplay between the released PC and console versions.

The free Splatter Royale mode adds battles for up to 40 players. There you take on the role of demonic versions of well-known characters and face other participants.

Weapons range from chainsaws and meat cleavers to shotguns and other firearms. Melee and ranged attacks alternate depending on the enemy group, ammunition and your character's special abilities.

Each role has its own progression tree. Points can be spent to improve skills, so individual survivors can specialize more in damage, survival or support.

Evil Dead: The Game was removed from digital game stores in late April 2025. At the time, Saber Interactive stated that copies already purchased can continue to be used and that the servers should stay online for existing players.

The 2025 assurance is no guarantee of indefinite continued operation. Since multiplayer matches depend on online services, their availability is crucial to the gameplay experience.

Saber Interactive developed the game at its Madrid studio together with Boss Team Games. The foundation is the original three Evil Dead films and the series Ash vs Evil Dead.

According to the developers, Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell were involved in the production. The game combines familiar locations and characters with an asymmetrical multiplayer concept, instead of retelling the plot of a single film.
