What is EXODUS?

EXODUS is a story-driven science fiction action RPG from Archetype Entertainment, set around 40,000 years in the future. You play Jun Aslan, a scavenger who becomes a Traveler and searches for powerful Celestial relics to save his home world Lidon from the so-called Rot.

The game combines third-person combat, exploration, companions and far-reaching decisions. Time dilation is especially important: while Jun experiences only days on interstellar journeys, weeks, years or even longer periods can pass on Lidon.

Gameplay

EXODUS plays as a third-person action RPG with cover, firearms, melee combat and Celestial technology. Jun's Recycler covers various weapon roles from mid to long range. His Gauntlet, meanwhile, combines combat and exploration: abilities can control enemies, clear obstacles or open new paths through the environment.

Companions fight actively alongside you and have their own abilities. In the TGS demo, for example, a Gauntlet ability could be combined with a rocket attack from a companion. Such synergies are shown clearly in the interface and are meant to encourage tactical use of your crew.

Paladin, Immortal and decisions

Jun's decisions move between the Paladin and Immortal alignments. They are not meant as a simple good-versus-evil system: Paladin stands more for human values and consideration for others, while Immortal stands more for the mindset of the Celestials and the pursuit of power or possibilities.

Alignment has a direct effect on progression and determines which abilities can be developed. Decisions can also change companions, trigger new missions, open other story sections and, in the long term, affect the state of Lidon.

Crew and Awakened

Over the course of the game, Jun assembles a crew of humans and so-called Awakened. These are intelligent animals altered by bioengineering and cybernetics, who are fully integrated into society. Known companions include Phaedra, Elise, Tom, Salt and C.C. Orlev.

Companions bring their own abilities, personalities and relationships. Decisions change their attitude toward Jun, and their individual abilities can be used deliberately in combat. Archetype therefore describes the crew not just as narrative companionship but as a core part of combat and progression.

Time dilation and the home world Lidon

Interstellar travel changes the flow of time on the home world in EXODUS. While Jun Aslan is travelling for a few days, years can pass on Lidon. People age, relationships change and decisions only show their consequences on his return.

Lidon keeps developing even while Jun is away. His missions, the technologies he brings back and his choice of allies affect the future of the people there.

Khonsu: The Freedom of the Kay

On the Khonsu space station, Jun Aslan decides the future of the Kay, a community of intelligent, genetically modified frogs. Jun's half-brother Gideon Aslan has seized the station. To get important ship parts from Suliman Tenjin, Jun helps retake it.

Several decisions pit compassion against power: Jun can leave a wounded enemy a medipack, buy a guard's access card or take it by force. Finally, Suliman demands that the station's signal transmitters be reprogrammed so that the Kay obey his dynasty for generations. Instead, Jun can choose to protect them without this control.

The mission combines cover-based combat, zero gravity and Gauntlet abilities. Its Petrify function can overcome a plasma beam, while companion Elise and Suliman are drawn into the fighting.

Game series

EXODUS is developed by Archetype Entertainment and published by Wizards of the Coast. The team includes veterans who previously worked on Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Halo, among others.

The game sits at the centre of a larger science fiction universe with novels, tabletop RPG material and other companion projects. For the video game itself, however, Jun Aslan's journey through the Centauri Cluster remains the main entry point.
