What is For Honor?

For Honor is an action game with directional melee combat. Knights, Vikings, Samurai and other warriors clash in duels and team battles. A standalone campaign tells the conflict from several perspectives.

In multiplayer, precise attacks, parries and the abilities of the chosen heroes decide how a fight goes. Teamwork is also important.

Platforms

For Honor has native versions for Windows PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S it runs via backward compatibility. Ubisoft mentions technical improvements and, on the newer consoles, a display at 60 frames per second.

The later performance mode allows higher frame rates with reduced graphics detail. It does not mean a standalone PS5 or Xbox Series release. On Linux and Steam Deck, For Honor has been unplayable since Sept 10, 2026 due to anti-cheat requirements.

Gameplay

For Honor relies on choosing the right attack and guard direction. Parries, feints and dodges decide how an encounter plays out. Reach and tempo depend on the chosen character.

In team fights, territory control and support from allies come into play. The different heroes can break through a defence, keep enemies at a distance or launch quick counterattacks.

Warrior factions and heroes

Knights, Vikings, Samurai, Wu Lin and Wanderers form the main warrior factions of For Honor. The heroes differ in weapons, mobility and individual moves. Ubisoft has kept adding new characters to the roster since launch.

Choosing a hero therefore isn't just about their looks. Their reach and their options in direct duels change the entire playstyle.

Crossplay and shared progress

Since Oct 2022, players on PC, PlayStation and Xbox can form cross-platform groups. Ubisoft Connect enables shared matches with friends playing on another platform. Shared matchmaking was introduced back in March 2022.

Since Sept 11, 2025, game content and progress can also be synced between linked accounts. This includes Glory levels, parts of the inventory and campaign progress. The game itself still has to be bought separately for each platform.

The story campaign

The campaign follows the perspectives of Knights, Vikings and Samurai. At its center is a conflict that the leader Apollyon keeps escalating. Each faction gets its own characters and locations.

The story can be played alone or online with a second player. It introduces the basics of combat, while multiplayer is designed for repeated encounters and different modes.

For Honor was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The story is set in the fictional Heathmoor. Knights, Vikings and Samurai form the starting point of the conflict; more warrior factions were added later.

The characters draw on historical models, but For Honor creates its own game world. Even after the 2017 launch, the game received new heroes and lasting multiplayer features.
