Gameplay

The party plans its route on a changing world map, visits locations, collects resources and decides which risks are worth taking. Combat runs in turns. Equipment, character stats, dice mechanics and tactical positioning all interlock. Precisely because new maps create different paths and encounters, a successful strategy cannot simply be repeated unchanged.

DLCs and expansions

Free adventures and separately available character packs add to For The King II. Child of Chaos appeared together with Tinkerers of Fate in September 2025, introducing Toymaker and Fortune Teller. In November 2025, the adventure A New Age and Fallen Oaths followed, with Voidwalker and Fallen Knight. Into The Wild added Angler and Beekeeper in May 2026. The paid character packs require the base game and are not standalone games.

The further Dust to Dust character pack is announced for November 2026. Steam confirms Gravedigger and Pugilist as new playable characters but so far only gives the month. IronOak Games also announced the free adventure A Mother Below. Both are announced content, not expansions that have already been released.

Dice checks and risk

For The King II uses movement, encounter and combat mechanics inspired by dice. Not every plan works out. What matters is assembling and equipping a party so that bad results remain manageable. Chance affects how things unfold, but it does not replace the strategic choice of your next route, your consumables and the right moment for a fight.

Tactics with a new combat grid

Compared with the first game, the combat formation is significantly expanded. Rows, tiles and movement decide which characters are protected and how attacks take effect. Shields can secure a rear position, enemies can be pushed into dangerous tiles, and some abilities affect several grid tiles. The party's positioning is therefore just as important as its weapon inventory.

Chapters and replay value

The current Steam description lists seven narratively linked adventures. Your party travels with its characters through separately generated maps and can restart after failures with new knowledge and unlocked options. Alongside the ongoing campaign, standalone dungeon modes offer a different goal: mastering as many challenges as possible with a well-matched party.

Dark Carnival: the endless dungeon

In the permanently available Dark Carnival mode, your party fights its way through consecutive dungeon floors. Along the way it collects carnival tickets, chooses new paths and makes further decisions in special rooms. Unlike the narrative campaign, this mode focuses on as long a run as possible and on the interplay of equipment, resources and hero roles.

Characters and party roles

Character classes bring different abilities and tasks. The base game includes Blacksmith, Hunter and Herbalist, among others. Expansions added Toymaker, Fortune Teller, Voidwalker, Fallen Knight, Beekeeper and Angler. The extra choice changes party tactics without lifting the limit of four characters.

Base game, character packs and editions

The store offers a selection of editions and packs next to the base game, which may include extra character packs or the soundtrack. These offers change what you buy, not the identity of the original game. The character DLCs listed separately on Steam require the base game. Edition names should therefore be distinguished from native platform versions.

The Regions of Fahrul

The journey takes you through different regions with their own environments, including forests, swamps, volcanic landscapes and coasts. Because the map of each run is generated procedurally, your routes and encounters change. Exploration and combat tactics are linked: if you take detours, you must weigh resources and possible risks against the goals you can reach.

For The King II continues the fantasy world of Fahrul and the interplay of board-game-style checks, turn-based encounters and repeatable runs. Compared with the first game, the party size has been expanded to four characters. The multi-row combat grid opens up new positioning and area attacks. The story of Rosomon sets its own accents, so newcomers can also understand the setting without prior knowledge.
