What is Halo: Combat Evolved?

Halo: Combat Evolved is Bungie's 2001 science fiction first-person shooter and one of the launch titles for the original Xbox. As Master Chief, the player lands with the AI Cortana on a massive ring world called Halo, fights the Covenant and, along the way, discovers a second, far larger threat.

The game combines a linear campaign with more expansive combat arenas, vehicles and a physics and weapons sandbox approach that shaped the later Halo series.

Release

Halo: Combat Evolved was released on Nov 15, 2001 alongside the original Xbox. The title established Master Chief, Cortana and the Covenant as central characters and factions of the new Halo series, respectively.

Later re-releases such as Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary and the version in Halo: The Master Chief Collection are standalone modernised releases and should not be equated with the original Xbox product.

Platforms

The original release of Halo: Combat Evolved was made for the original Xbox. Later, official PC versions and modernised editions followed. Halo Studios still explicitly distinguishes today between the original 2001 Xbox version and later Anniversary/MCC versions, because rendering, assets and individual technical details differ.

Gameplay

Combat Evolved combines firearms, grenades, melee combat and vehicles in open battle arenas. The player can carry only two weapons at once, so weapon switching and picking up enemy equipment become a fixed part of the combat rhythm. Regenerating energy shields, different Covenant enemy roles and vehicles such as the Warthog shape the sandbox.

Many missions switch between tighter interiors and larger outdoor areas. The shooter therefore relies not only on reflexes, but also on positioning, vehicle use and using different weapons against specific enemy types.

Significance for Halo and Xbox

Combat Evolved laid the foundation for the Halo series in 2001 and was closely tied to the launch of the Xbox. Master Chief, Cortana, the Covenant, the Ringworlds and the interplay of campaign, vehicles and local multiplayer remained central reference points of the series for decades.

When creating modern reinterpretations, Halo Studios still draws directly on the original designs, assets and atmosphere of the 2001 version and treats them as a reference point for later remasters and remakes.
