What is Hytale?

Hytale is a voxel sandbox RPG from Hypixel Studios. Early Access combines a procedurally generated world with exploration, combat, building, crafting and farming. Already playable are Exploration Mode, Creative Mode, multiplayer and extensive modding tools.

The current version is explicitly still unfinished. During Early Access, Hypixel Studios is gradually expanding Hytale with new progression, adventure and world systems, rather than treating the current state as a finished 1.0 game.

Platforms

For single player, offline play is also possible after installation. Downloads, updates and periodic authentication still require an internet connection.

Gameplay

In Exploration Mode you explore procedurally generated worlds, gather resources, build bases, craft gear and fight creatures. Creative Mode adds extra building and development tools, and Hytale can be played both solo and in multiplayer.

The long-term direction goes beyond a pure building sandbox: Hypixel Studios is developing Hytale as an RPG sandbox with stronger progression, dungeons, boss fights and systemic encounters. Chapter 1 is the first big step in that direction.

Chapter I: Goblin Breach and Deepworks

The quest line starts at the Forgotten Temple with the Goblin Lab. In the chapter menu, players can see their next goals. Goblin Breach portals lead into newly generated fragments of Orbis, the Guttering Hollows. There the pressure from the Void grows. Fights and upgrades at the Breach Console can grant extra exploration time.

Goblins use new tools such as Scrap Drill, Scrap Glider, Rocket Boots, Hookshot and Spyglass. The finale is Deepworks, Hytale's first hand-built dungeon, with traps, checkpoints, the Elite Goblin Feastmaster and the multi-phase final boss Gobliterator.

With this, Chapter I adds a fixed sequence of progression goals alongside the open sandbox. The chapter is part of Early Access and is not a standalone game.

Modding, servers and multiplayer

Modding has been part of Hytale's core since the first Early Access day. Alongside the in-game tools, Hypixel Studios provides server files and development tools; your own servers, mods and custom content are explicitly part of the long-term platform idea.

Several systems are therefore being built so that Hypixel Studios is not the only one able to use them. The Encounter Manager in Chapter 1 models boss phases and waves as content rather than hard-wired engine code, so creators can build on it too.

Runestones and combat abilities

Chapter I adds the Runebinder's Lattice to the gear. Up to two active Ability Runestones and further modifying Runestones can be combined. At launch the system includes seven abilities and eight modifications, including Fireball, Ground Slam, Wind Strike and Chain Hook.

The new abilities use mana. Hits with special weapon attacks can speed up regeneration. Runeforging has so far only been announced for a later version.

Minigames and matchmaking

Two minigame formats were introduced with Chapter I: Prop Hunt, with hiding and seeking, and Shuffle Jam, with twelve rotating short competitions. The group feature is intended to let several players join the queue together.

According to the release notes, these game modes are not available right at chapter launch but are due to follow shortly after. A toolkit for community-made minigames is also only planned for now.
