It Takes Two

It Takes Two is an exclusively cooperative action-adventure by Hazelight Studios and Electronic Arts. Two players control Cody and May, who are turned into dolls after a spell. The campaign combines platforming sections, puzzles and changing character abilities. All challenges are designed for two people working together.

It Takes Two was released for PC on Mar 25, 2021. The Nintendo Switch version followed on Nov 4, 2022. For Oct 15, 2026, Electronic Arts and Hazelight announce the native Nintendo Switch 2 version, arriving on Oct 16 in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea.

Owners of the original Switch version can switch to the Switch 2 version for free in participating regions with the same Nintendo account. This offer does not apply in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. The launch date has been announced but has not yet arrived.

Native versions are available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. The Switch 2 version is set to follow on Oct 15, 2026. Hazelight develops the game, Electronic Arts is the publisher, and Turn Me Up Games supports the new Nintendo version.

According to EA, the Switch 2 version supports online crossplay with PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series. The original Switch version is excluded from this cross-platform online network. Local GameShare is supported between Switch and Switch 2. Cross-generation play within PlayStation or Xbox was already possible before.

The tasks in It Takes Two cannot be reduced to a single game mechanic. Cody and May gain new, coordinated abilities in different chapters. Obstacles, battles and puzzles require both characters to help each other and share tasks.

The campaign includes classic platforming sections, dexterity challenges, small mini-games and situations where the game deliberately changes its rules. The split screen is part of the concept, even when both partners play online.

Steam lists the minimum as Windows 8.1 or 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i3-2100T or AMD FX 6100, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon R7 260X, and 50 GB of free storage. Since early 2024, the Steam client itself only supports Windows 10 and newer Windows versions.

Recommended: an Intel Core i5-3570K or Ryzen 3 1300X, 16 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 980 or Radeon R9 290X. An EA account is required for the online features.

With the Friend's Pass, the second person can play without buying the full version. On the relevant platform, a free client version is installed and then an invitation is accepted. For the full campaign, at least one person must own the game and host the session.

According to EA, you can try the first chapter without the full game. The host sets the starting point and can invite more partners once the previous session has ended. Local co-op on the same device works without internet; online co-op requires matching accounts and, where applicable, platform subscriptions. The crossplay rules announced for 2026 expand on the older Friend's Pass descriptions.

According to Electronic Arts' published information, the native Switch 2 version runs in docked mode at 1080p and 60 frames per second. It also adds higher-resolution textures, reworked lighting effects, and shorter loading times and transitions. Turn Me Up Games prepared the port together with Hazelight.

Switch versions already purchased can be upgraded to Switch 2 for free in many regions. The game must be registered to the same Nintendo account for this. EA explicitly names regional exceptions, including Japan and South Korea. The new online crossplay network includes Switch 2, but not the original Switch version.

Cody and May are facing a separation. Their daughter Rose wishes for them to find their way back to each other. When the parents then awaken in doll bodies, they must find their way back together. The talking book Dr. Hakim accompanies the journey through a magically altered everyday world.

The puzzles also reflect their relationship: both get different tasks and must work together to move forward.

According to Steam, the PC version supports German on-screen text, subtitles and full German voice-over. The game is designed for exactly two people, either locally on one screen or online. There is no standalone single-player campaign.

The Friend's Pass is a separate free access option for the second person and is not the same as a permanently playable full version.

The developer is the Swedish studio Hazelight under the creative direction of Josef Fares. It Takes Two was published by Electronic Arts in 2021. The studio had previously created A Way Out, a two-player adventure, and continued its co-op focus in 2025 with Split Fiction.

For the native Switch 2 version, Hazelight is working with porting specialist Turn Me Up Games. The game concept of It Takes Two remains unchanged, while the platform features are expanded.
