Release

5 years agoSource: Steam

Kitaria Fables came out in September 2021 for Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Regional store listings differ by one day: Steam, the German PlayStation page and the Xbox Store list September 1, while Nintendo Germany gives September 2, 2021 for the Switch version.

The original announcement had planned September 3. The launch was brought forward. On Xbox, the game supports Smart Delivery for Xbox One and Xbox Series. This connection does not mean a cross-platform licence between Microsoft, PlayStation, Nintendo and Steam.

Six native platform versions are confirmed: Windows PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Xbox Wire mentions Smart Delivery for both Xbox generations; the PlayStation and Nintendo stores list their respective versions separately.

The focus is on local co-op for two players, not a standalone cross-platform online mode. On PC, Steam also offers Remote Play Together, which lets you use local co-op over a remote connection. The Steam listing includes German menu text but no German voice audio.

Gameplay

The adventure takes you from Tatzendorf into forests, dangerous areas and dungeons. Here, Nyanza fights wild creatures with melee weapons, bows and magic. Enemies leave behind materials needed for stronger equipment and supplies.

Between expeditions, you look after fields, gather resources and talk to residents whose quests open up the game world. Farming is not just decoration: the harvest supplements supplies on longer exploration trips. If you prefer to focus on combat, you can spend much of your time away from the farm.

DLCs and expansions

Kitaria Fables has numerous cosmetic add-on packs, including alternative fur colours, hats, wings and other accessories. They change the character's appearance and are not additional worlds or standalone games.

The Deluxe Edition bundles the base game with a selection of these designs. The publisher notes that Deluxe cosmetics are tied to the account used to buy the edition. Before buying, check whether an offer includes the full game, a Deluxe edition or just a single costume pack.

Classless combat and ancient magic

In real-time battles, you can combine sword, bow and spells. There is no fixed character class. Depending on the enemy, Nyanza can focus on melee or ranged damage and change equipment.

Nyanza learns forbidden magic from an old spellbook. The scholar Sage Alby helps unlock further spells using collected magic spheres. Fire magic and other elements expand the combat options and allow different combinations for two players.

Thunderbunn Farm: grow and supply

The Thunderbunn Farm has its own farmland. Nyanza sows seeds, tends plants and uses the harvest as an ingredient for dishes or sells it. Next to the farm is a training area where you can try out new attacks and spells.

The farm serves as a counterpoint to combat, but it is linked to expeditions: your own supplies make trips to distant areas easier, while adventures bring in money and materials for further upgrades.

Craft equipment and help in the village

In the village, you can have gathered raw materials and collected materials processed. Traders and craftsmen help to improve weapons, armour and provisions. Alongside the main story quests, there are jobs for residents whose rewards make the next expeditions easier.

You'll find more resources in dungeons and the different regions of Kitaria. The mix of quests, crafting and farming creates a cycle where almost every expedition contributes to later equipment.

Play together: local co-op and Steam Remote Play

The campaign of Kitaria Fables supports two people on the same device. In co-op, both players can explore the world, fight battles, gather materials and run the farm. Different equipment allows combinations such as a melee fighter and a ranged mage.

Steam offers Remote Play Together as a way to carry local play over the internet. This is not a separate online co-op or crossplay infrastructure: on consoles, the confirmed mode is local co-op.

Reworked navigation and difficulty levels

A major update from September 2025 changed several permanent game systems. Instead of the original single difficulty level, there are now four switchable levels. Discovered fast travel points now work in both directions, and the world map more clearly marks paths, unopened chests and available quests.

At Thunderbunn Farm, you can now rest until morning, noon or evening after the rework. Dialogue and voice versions have also been reworked. According to the publisher, these features apply to PC, Switch, PlayStation and both Xbox generations.
