What is LIMBO?
LIMBO is a dark puzzle platformer from Danish studio Playdead. A boy enters a hostile world because he wants to find out what happened to his sister. The story is conveyed mainly through movement, imagery and sound, not through explanatory dialogue.
Forests, machines and abstract structures appear as black silhouettes against grey, misty backgrounds. Players often have to recognise dangers and possible paths from outlines alone.

Gameplay
The boy runs, jumps, pulls and moves objects. Some obstacles only become solvable once you see the environment as a connected system: a box becomes a climbing aid, a machine changes a passage, a trap requires precise timing. Puzzles and dexterity sections flow into one another.
LIMBO uses a two-dimensional side view and physics-based interactions. Progress comes from observation, experimentation and solving new situations. Experience points, weapon stats or a classic role-playing inventory are not core systems.

Puzzles, physics and hazards
Gravity, momentum and movable objects shape many tasks. The solution often lies in the right order of actions or in judging a time window. New areas combine familiar physical principles with changed hazards.
Mistakes can lead to a game over. The game makes the consequence clear without turning it into a separate combat or survival system with resource management. Anyone who fails must better understand the obstacle and its triggers.

Story and storytelling
The starting point is the search for the missing sister. The story, however, leaves players a lot of interpretive work: encounters and places give clues, instead of reeling off a fully spoken story with explanatory cutscenes.
The path leads from lonely forest passages to menacing creatures and technical installations. The world is revealed less through names or background texts than through what can be directly observed in it. The game's structure can be described without giving away the ending.

Black-and-white graphics and sound
LIMBO largely does without color. Moving shadows, fog, backlighting and dark foregrounds hide parts of the game world. The boy is often only recognizable as a silhouette. The shift between organic and industrial forms structures the journey without relying on strongly changing color palettes.
The sound design relies on noises and restrained sound textures. They create atmosphere and draw attention to movements and dangers, even when these are not yet clearly visible.

Single-player and controls
LIMBO is a single-player game. The Nintendo Switch version supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes. On Steam, controller support, achievements and cloud saves are offered. The iOS version supports touch input as well as compatible external controllers.
Cloud saves and Remote Play on supported systems are not multiplayer modes. Whether a convenience feature exists on a specific console or mobile version must be confirmed by the respective store listing.

Playdead and ports
Playdead developed LIMBO in Copenhagen. The first release came in 2010 via Xbox Live Arcade. Later versions brought the puzzle platformer to more consoles, PCs and mobile devices. For the PS Vita port, Playdead worked with Double Eleven.
The later INSIDE also comes from Playdead and is a standalone game, not add-on content for LIMBO. Both titles are sold together as a bundle on some platforms.
