What is Little Nightmares?

Little Nightmares is an atmospheric puzzle adventure by Tarsier Studios. It centers on Six, who must escape the Maw. The environment is deliberately oversized and staged to feel threatening.

The game combines exploration, spatial puzzles, platforming and hiding. Movement paths, environmental objects and timing determine your progress.

The original version came out in 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. On Nintendo Switch, the Complete Edition followed in 2018, combining the main game with the Secrets of the Maw expansion pass. In 2023, the original was also made native for iOS and Android.

The Little Nightmares Enhanced Edition, released in 2025, is its own product version with a separate product identity, not just a compatibility mode of the original.

Platforms

The original product family is available natively for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The Switch version came out as Complete Edition and additionally includes the story of Secrets of the Maw.

The Switch version is compatible with Switch 2, but this does not make it a native Switch 2 version. For PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 there is instead the separate Enhanced Edition.

Gameplay

Six moves through connected areas of the Maw, climbs over furniture and ladders, jumps over chasms and moves objects to open paths. Many rooms work as both a platforming sequence and a puzzle.

Enemies are physically superior to Six. The game therefore relies on timing, cover and escape routes. Light, scale and sound help to read rooms and threats.

DLCs and expansions

Secrets of the Maw is the major story expansion pass for the original. It tells a parallel escape story with the Runaway Kid and leads through areas of the Maw that Six does not visit in her campaign.

The pass includes three chapters: The Depths, The Hideaway and The Residence. The expansion thus adds a second perspective on key locations and events of the main game.

The Maw and Six

The Maw is a huge, ship-like structure whose rooms seem like an oversized dollhouse world to Six. The journey leads from the lower areas of the ship into increasingly controlled and inhabited zones.

Six has no conventional combat equipment. Her key tools are mobility, observation, a lighter and the ability to interact with objects in the environment.

The iOS and Android versions were adapted for touch devices by Playdigious. These include a revised user interface, touch control modes and support for compatible controllers. On iOS, Game Center features and cloud saves are also supported.

Distinction from the Enhanced Edition

The 2025 Enhanced Edition brings, among other things, 60 FPS, higher resolution, additional graphics effects and new assistance options. It has its own save files and its own product identity. The PS5, Xbox Series and Switch 2 versions therefore belong to this edition and not to the original from 2017.
