What is Mortal Shell II?

Mortal Shell II is a standalone dark fantasy action RPG from Cold Symmetry and the sequel to Mortal Shell. As the Harbinger, you roam a ruined world to recover the stolen eggs of the Undermether. Along the way, you can possess the bodies of fallen warriors and use their different abilities for your own fighting style.

The sequel again focuses on demanding combat, but pairs it with a larger, tightly interwoven game world, numerous optional dungeons and significantly more options for building up individual shells.

Gameplay

In combat, Mortal Shell II combines heavy melee weapons, ranged options, stance breaks and critical hits. Unlike many Soulslikes, the game does not use a classic stamina bar. Dodging, attacking and combos are therefore less held back by a draining resource, while timing, positioning and reading enemy attacks remain decisive.

Weapons can be upgraded and tailored to different playstyles. Executions and strong counters create short offensive windows in which a well-built character can deal very high damage.

DLCs and expansions

Mortal Shell II has a separate Devout Edition upgrade with eight Obsidian skins for the playable shells. The new looks change how the warriors appear, not their abilities or the game world.

The Devout Edition bundles the base game with this add-on pack. If you already own the standard version, you can buy the cosmetic content as an expansion.

Shells and abilities

The bodies of eight fallen warriors lie in the world, and the Harbinger can take them over as shells. Each shell has its own strengths, abilities and memories, so it works not only as a visual shell but as its own gameplay toolkit.

Finding new shells is therefore part of character development. Instead of committing permanently to a single figure, you can develop different bodies and weapons and redirect your play style as the adventure progresses.

Progress and Tarstones

Since August 2026, Glimpses and Tarcores are no longer finite. These resources can be used to upgrade shells and Tarstones in a single run. Mether's Severance allows resetting a shell, while Fragile Tarstones return resources when they break.

Rotten Autumn adds ten new Tarstones to the selection. They create additional ways to match equipment and abilities to each other.

Adaptive difficulty

Since September 2026, Mortal Shell II offers optional Adaptive Difficulty. The experimental system is off by default and, when activated, changes enemy stats based on the player's previous progress.

Sieges can, among other things, increase enemy damage, health points and break resistance. Repeated defeats, by contrast, gradually lower these values and limit especially harsh individual attacks. The adjustments move back toward normal balance over time. Players who keep succeeding can also let the system scale beyond the original highest difficulty. The easing does not apply in Night Mode.

As an alternative to the original music, a soundtrack by Sakis Tolis is available, who is known as a musician from the metal band Rotting Christ.
