What is Northgard?

Northgard is a real-time strategy game from Shiro Games with settlement building, resource management and survival elements. A Viking clan explores an unknown continent, assigns residents to jobs, expands its territory and must survive winter, hostile creatures and rival clans at the same time.

Matches can be decided through several permanent victory paths, including conquest, glory, knowledge and trade. The playable clans significantly change economy, military and preferred strategies.

Northgard was released on March 7, 2018 for PC. In 2019, native console versions followed for Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. The mobile version came out in 2021, first on iOS and then on Android.

On December 4, 2025, the PC version was expanded into Northgard: Definitive Edition. The major update integrated the Cross of Vidar campaign expansion and additional clans into the base game and expanded existing systems such as Bifröst.

Platforms

Native versions of Northgard exist for PC (Windows, macOS and Linux), Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. The Xbox One version is playable on Xbox Series X|S and the PS4 version on PS5, but is not listed here as a separate native Series/PS5 version.

Gameplay

A match begins with a small clan and a few buildings. Residents are retrained as farmers, woodcutters, warriors, sailors or lore gatherers; new zones must be explored, settled and paid for. Food, wood, crowns and other resources determine how fast a settlement can grow.

The core tension comes from expansion and survival: winter lowers production, neutral factions and creatures block areas, while rivals work toward their own victory conditions. Different clans change units, bonuses, relics and economic focus, creating clearly different strategies.

DLCs and expansions

Cross of Vidar continues the campaign after Ragnarök and moves parts of the story to Neustria in the southern kingdoms. Alongside this major campaign expansion, Northgard was extended over the years with additional playable clans.

With the Definitive Edition, Cross of Vidar was permanently integrated into the PC base version together with several clans previously sold separately. Other additional clans remain available as separate expansions.

System requirements

Northgard is technically fairly modest. The Steam page lists as minimum hardware a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo or comparable processor, 1 GB RAM and a GeForce 450 GTS or Radeon HD 5750. Recommended are an Intel i5 quad-core at 3.1 GHz, 2 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 660 or Radeon HD 7800. Since 2024, the Steam client itself only supports Windows 10 and newer.

Conquest and Bifröst

Conquest is a permanent scenario mode that can be played solo or cooperatively and combines a series of special challenges with clan-based bonuses. Shiro describes its scope as more than 100 additional hours of play.

Bifröst was added in 2024 as another major mode and is designed for up to four players. The Definitive Edition further expanded Bifröst and made its biomes usable in additional PvE and PvP contexts.

Multiplayer, co-op and modding

On PC, Northgard supports online PvP and online co-op. The Steam Workshop and an integrated level editor allow custom maps and scenarios; with the Definitive Edition, scripting was also made more flexible. Console and mobile versions also support multiplayer, though features and player counts vary by platform.

Mobile version

Playdigious released Northgard on iOS on April 12, 2021 and on Android on August 24, 2021. The mobile version keeps the core of settlement building, various victory conditions and story mode; multiplayer and several clan expansions were also adapted for mobile devices.
