Northgard Battlegrounds

Northgard Battlegrounds combines building a Viking village with automatically fought battles. Instead of controlling your units directly during the fight, you decide beforehand, using buildings, resources, clan abilities and divine blessings, which warriors take part and how they complement each other.

This standalone strategy game comes from Funday Games and is set in the world of Northgard. Shiro Unlimited handles the publishing.

Northgard Battlegrounds has been available in early access on PC via Steam since Oct 27, 2026. Funday Games and Shiro Unlimited want to use this development phase for at least six months before the full version follows.

Expansion with additional clans, chieftains, buildings and units is planned. Which of this content arrives when also depends on player feedback.

Northgard Battlegrounds has been released for Windows PCs via Steam. The Steam version supports single-player matches and asynchronous online PvP, in which opposing lineups can face off without both players being online at the same time.

According to the developer, the game is verified for Steam Deck. This is a compatibility confirmation for the handheld PC, not a standalone console release.

The user interface and subtitles are available in German, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese (Simplified), Polish and Portuguese (Brazil).

Each round you construct new buildings, gather resources and assemble units. Production buildings boost your economy, while military structures supply warriors. Their placement is key: neighbouring structures can strengthen one another and together open up new tactical options.

After the building phase, your warriors head into battle on their own. The outcome depends mainly on how you assembled your settlement and army beforehand.

A Supporter Pack for Northgard Battlegrounds is available on Steam. The core game and access to the regular battles are separate from it. Planned additional clans and game mechanics will be announced as part of early access development.

For the Windows version, Steam lists at least an Intel Core i3-9100F, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1050 and 2.2 GB of free storage. Recommended are an Intel Core i5-9400F, 16 GB RAM and a GTX 1060. The listed operating system is Windows 10.

At the early access launch, four clans are available: Stag, Raven, Wolf and Bear. They bring different abilities that shape the growth of your settlement and the makeup of your warriors. Depending on the clan, different combinations of buildings and divine blessings become available.

Funday Games plans additional clans and chieftains during further development.

Through knowledge you gather, you can win the favour of Norse gods. Their blessings change the strengths of your village and its warriors. Fate cards bring further decisions into play and allow different combinations.

Whether you first expand your economy or strengthen your warriors depends on which divine powers and cards are available to you. Together with the layout of your buildings, this creates different strategies for the next battles.

The roster includes classic Northgard warriors such as shieldbearers and axe throwers. Mythological beings such as Jötnar, Draugr and Wyverns join them. The different groups complement each other through their traits and through the buildings they produce.

Since battles run automatically, the tactical focus lies on preparation rather than real-time commands during combat.

Northgard Battlegrounds offers single-player matches and online battles against other players' lineups. In asynchronous PvP, you do not need to be online at the same time as your opponent. A solid settlement strategy is meant to hold up both when attacking other clans and when defending.

The early access version includes the full basic gameplay: village building, army equipment, blessings and auto-battles. Funday Games plans further clans and additional tactical options during development. The developers take suggestions from community discussions and surveys into their planning.

Funday Games from Denmark develops Northgard Battlegrounds. The studio is known, among other things, for Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor. Shiro Unlimited, the publishing label of Shiro Games, releases the spin-off and links it to the Northgard universe.
