What is Once Human?

Once Human is a free open-world survival game by Starry Studio and NetEase Games. The world of Nalcott has been changed by the alien substance Stardust. As a Meta-Human, you gather resources, build your own territory and fight Deviants and other anomalous creatures.

Survival crafting, base building, firearm combat and cooperative online play form the core. Polluted food and water affect not only stats but also the character's mental state.

DLCs and expansions

Isles of Abyss has been available since Oct 22, 2026 as a free ocean scenario for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, iOS and Android. In the American Pacific time zone, the release began after maintenance on Oct 21. The island world combines ship voyages, divable ruins and dangerous sea areas with new building and survival systems.

Players can upgrade ships from a simple sailboat to a motorised base. On the islands, resources and challenges form the basis for better gear. At sea, enemy ships attack, while shipwrecks, resources and creatures wait underwater. The Sunken Lord is the major shared challenge of the scenario.

Build, sail and defend ships

In Isles of Abyss, players build their own ships from hulls, decks and various facilities. Designs can be saved and shared with friends. Propulsion ranges from sails to fuel and electricity.

Marked routes can be sailed automatically with Auto Cruise. Trawl nets let you collect fish while under way. Fish cages and maritime production facilities supply extra materials for feeding the crew.

New dangers while diving and on the islands

Underwater exploration and shifting environmental hazards add to the struggle for survival. Diving suits, oxygen tanks and harpoons let you explore sunken buildings, shipwrecks and labs. Treasure maps point to hidden locations.

In so-called Haywire Zones, dense fog, unusual rain and extreme temperatures change visibility, supplies and the level of danger. Preparation therefore depends on the destination: heat and pollution protection are just as important as weapons for some expeditions.

Scenario progress and RaidZone

Isles of Abyss focuses on research progress instead of the usual level-up. Characters already start the PvE scenario at max level. Exploration, collected resources and special challenges unlock higher equipment tiers and new ship technology. Existing weapon blueprints and mods remain usable, but their full effect grows with the unlocked technology. The Cradle system is not available here.

The PvE scenario is divided into two phases with a total runtime of about three weeks. There is also a separate RaidZone variant for PvP on the archipelago, where enemy ships can be attacked and sunk.

DualSense features on PlayStation 5

On PlayStation 5, Isles of Abyss supports haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers of the DualSense controller. Vibrations convey waves, swell and hits on the ship's hull. When firing heavy ship cannons and using grappling hooks, the triggers create noticeable resistance.

The expansion also uses the PS5's SSD for fast transitions between islands, ship trips and underwater sections.
