What is Pokémon UNITE?

Pokémon UNITE is a free-to-play team strategy game for Nintendo Switch, iOS and Android. Two teams of five players face off on Aeos Island. Instead of collecting badges or fighting turn by turn, the score at the end of a time-limited match decides the outcome.

TiMi Studio Group developed the game together with The Pokémon Company. The battles combine typical Pokémon abilities and evolutions with direct control, fixed team roles and shared objectives.

Gameplay

Five Pokémon fight together against an enemy team. Wild and enemy Pokémon give experience and Aeos Energy. Energy scores points once a player drops it into an enemy goal zone.

Defeated wild Pokémon provide resources and advantages, while the team must choose between attacking, defending and fighting over map objectives. Whoever scores more points by the end wins the match.

Pokémon, roles and abilities

Before a match, each participant picks a playable Pokémon with its own strengths, moves and team role. Some are especially suited to direct damage, others to defense, fast attacks or supporting their teammates.

During a match, Pokémon level up, learn new moves and sometimes evolve. This makes the early minutes of a battle very different from the later team fights.

Held items and battle items

Held items strengthen Pokémon according to their role and playstyle. For team setup, besides Pokémon choice, the equipped items and move selection are also important.

Additional battle items can be used during a match. They complement individual abilities and can make the difference in an escape or an attack.

Which content remains after shutdown?

From Nov 12, 2026, Pokémon UNITE will get a memory library. It lets you view unlocked Pokémon licenses, Holowear, trainer outfits, awards, tournament entries and certain other content. A training area is also planned as part of this feature, but not regular online battles.

The required data must be downloaded before Mar 23, 2027. Without this download, the library cannot be opened after shutdown. Local data generally cannot be transferred when you change devices. After the service ends, there is no support for the feature.

Ranked battles and competitions

Pokémon UNITE has ranked battles, in which players can climb into higher ranks by winning. Teamwork in five-player teams is just as important as handling map objectives and Pokémon abilities.

A separate Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown was announced in Tokyo for 2027. Qualifiers begin on Dec 5, 2026. The tournament is not part of the 2027 Pokémon World Championships.

Game series

Pokémon UNITE reimagines the familiar Pokémon world as a competitive real-time team game. It is not a classic main-series RPG and, instead of turn-based trainer battles, uses short matches with goal zones, team roles and jointly controlled objectives.

The Pokémon brand comes from Nintendo, Creatures and GAME FREAK. For developing UNITE, The Pokémon Company worked with TiMi Studio Group, which is part of Tencent.
