Gameplay

Black Budget was designed as a PvPvE extraction shooter from a first-person perspective. Up to three players formed a squad; the tests planned matches with up to 45 players in total. The island, about 2.5 × 2.5 kilometers, combined enemy contractors, AI threats and an anomaly that changed the playable area over the course of a roughly 30-minute match.

Between matches, looted items were meant to feed into persistent progression. This included equipment, crafting and building up a personal base.

Development discontinued

After two public closed alpha phases and further internal development, PUBG Studios drew a line under the project on October 1, 2026. The studio stated that the earlier direction did not offer a basis for a long-term enjoyable experience. The discontinuation is therefore the permanent end point of the project and not a temporary production stop.

PUBG: Black Budget was part of KRAFTON's strategy to expand the PUBG-IP beyond the classic battle royale game into other genres. Black Budget was meant to develop this brand as an extraction shooter; PUBG Studios plans to carry the insights gained from development and testing into future projects after the discontinuation.
