R-Type Dimensions III

R-Type Dimensions III is a modernised reinterpretation of R-Type III: The Third Lightning. This horizontal shoot-’em-up lets players pilot the R-90 Ragnarok against the Bydo Empire and combines the precise arcade gameplay of the original with completely rebuilt 3D graphics.

During a run, you can switch between the classic 2D look and the modern 3D presentation at any time. The same applies to the music.

The PC version of R-Type Dimensions III was released on May 18, 2026 on Steam. The digital versions for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S followed around the international digital launch on May 19, 2026.

Since October 2026, Patch 1.0.3 bundles the game’s third major improvement round and permanently makes the previously separately sold digital artbook a free part of the base game.

R-Type Dimensions III is available natively on PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The console and PC versions belong to the same product family; the digital artbook has been part of the base game on all platforms since Patch 1.0.3.

The Force unit serves as both weapon and shield and can be attached in front of or behind the R-90 Ragnarok. Besides single player, the game supports local co-op for two players. New scoring and survival mechanics, customisable controls, Infinite Mode and various 3D camera perspectives expand the classic structure.

On PC, R-Type Dimensions III requires at least Windows 10 64-bit, an Intel Core i5-3470, 8 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and 10 GB of free storage. Recommended specs include a Core i5-6500, 16 GB RAM and a GeForce GTX 1660, among others.

Patch 1.0.3 permanently reworks mainly the boss fights in the later Advanced Mode stages. In stage 5, attack patterns, projectile speeds and movement behaviour of Rios, Gomander, Ring and Phantom Cell were adjusted, among other changes. Mother Bydo in stage 6 also behaves differently: the duration of the rotating arm phase now depends on the player’s hits instead of a fixed timer.

The update also fixes further collision, audio, HUD and display issues. ININ describes the third major patch round as the conclusion of the improvement initiative that began in summer.

The digital artbook has been part of the base game at no extra cost since Patch 1.0.3. Previously, on Steam, it was tied to higher-priced editions or separate add-on products. The book collects artwork and historical context on the R-Type series; according to ININ, the base price of the game remains unchanged.
