What is Rainbow Six Siege?

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is Ubisoft's tactical team shooter built around short, information-driven fights between attack and defense. Instead of large battlefields, Siege focuses on tight maps, destructible walls and floors, specialized operators with their own gadgets, and the question of how a team scouts, opens, secures and controls rooms under time pressure.

The game came out in 2015 and continues to be developed as an ongoing platform. With Siege X, it received a fundamental overhaul in 2025 and permanent free access to selected modes.

Release

10 years agoSource: Steam

Rainbow Six Siege was released on December 1, 2015. Native versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S followed on December 1, 2020. Since June 10, 2025, Siege X has been the current stage of development of the game: existing players kept content and progress, while Ubisoft also introduced Free Access and the technical and gameplay modernizations of Siege X.

Ubisoft continues to develop Siege seasonally. What matters most, however, is less each individual season than the game's lasting structure: the 5v5 core, the operators, the destruction systems and the fundamental systems added since Siege X.

Rainbow Six Siege is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The classic 5v5 core continues to run cross-platform within the supported ecosystem. The 6v6 mode Dual Front, introduced with Siege X, is by contrast permanently limited to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Free Access is available on the supported platforms. Competitive modes such as Ranked and Siege Cup, as well as additional operators, still require a paid upgrade or Premium access.

Gameplay

At its core, two teams of five face off as attackers and defenders. Attackers use drones, explosives and specialized gadgets, among other things, to scout enemy positions and open fortified rooms. Defenders reinforce walls, set traps, cameras and other tools, and try to control information and access.

The destructible environment is not just an edge effect but part of the tactics: walls and floors can be opened deliberately to create new lines of sight, vertical angles and unexpected entry points. Each operator combines a unique special ability with a customizable loadout, so team composition and gadget synergies make up a large part of the depth.

Siege X: the big overhaul

With Siege X, Ubisoft modernized the technical and gameplay foundation of the shooter. This includes reworked maps with higher-resolution textures and new lighting, additional destructible environment objects, smoother rappelling, reworked audio propagation, a communication wheel and a new pick-and-ban process.

Dual Front and R6 ShieldGuard

Dual Front is the permanent 6v6 mode on the District map, introduced with Siege X. Attackers and defenders can be used together on one team for the first time. Both sides attack enemy sectors and defend their own at the same time, while neutral objectives create additional tactical goals.

At the same time, R6 ShieldGuard bundles Ubisoft's protection systems against cheating and toxic behavior. This includes existing detection and hardening measures as well as security updates that can be rolled out outside regular maintenance windows.

Game series

Siege is part of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six, Ubisoft's long-running tactical shooter series. Unlike its more mission-based predecessors, Siege evolved into a permanently operated competitive platform. The name Siege X does not refer to a separate sequel, but to the major 2025 update of the same game.
