What is Red Rooster?

Red Rooster is an unreleased RPG from Summer Eternal. The studio is creating a political alternate world with a city whose buildings, objects and fire are meant to be not just settings for a story but interacting parts of the game system.

The story follows Redrick Roost, an imprisoned former office clerk. On behalf of a government agency, he is to covertly investigate a series of arsons linked to his brother's fire station. The focus is on investigation, conversations, decisions and the physical manipulation of the environment.

Release

Summer Eternal presented the concept in detail on Oct 14, 2026. The studio has not yet named a firm release date or release window on its official game page. The illustrations and early prototype footage show ongoing development, but no finished or playable release.

The company is publishing an anthology alongside the game covering world design, characters, concept art and early design experiments. This publication is not a way to play the game and cannot be equated with a released version of Red Rooster.

Platforms

At the reveal on Oct 14, Gematsu reported on a developer announcement naming PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2 as target platforms. Summer Eternal's project page currently has no published store links and no platform-specific dates.

The four platforms are therefore listed as announced versions. A release for PS4, Xbox One or the original Nintendo Switch is not confirmed. A joint release date and specific system requirements are also still open.

Gameplay

The developers want to combine the freedom of a branching RPG with the direct interaction of an immersive sim. Doors can be opened physically, lamps operated, tools used and movable objects picked up. The description explicitly speaks of objects with weight and inertia, and of a city whose furnishings, down to fires, are part of the game.

These mechanics are announced design goals. How reliably they can be combined in the finished game cannot yet be judged from the published concept material.

Arta-Tantor between heatwave and power struggles

The setting is the fictional, three-part city Arta-Tantor in an archipelago border region. It sits in an alternate history whose design draws on a summery Yugoslav coastal town of the 1980s, Eastern Europe and other European and Mediterranean influences.

During the thirteenth Continental Summer Games, the city suffers a long heatwave, power cuts and conspicuously many fires. The environmental crisis is therefore not just background colour but the basis for the central investigation.

Redrick Roost and the search for the arsonist

Redrick is serving a life sentence in a low-security prison for gross negligence. Shortly before a parole hearing, an authority offers him immunity. In return he is to infiltrate his brother's fire station and find out who started a series of fires.

The investigation leads him to missions, conversations and political entanglements. The studio has introduced Dr. Astrid Albers, a mathematician with opiate dependence, and bus driver Rico as key companions. The characters are part of a narrative presentation, not evidence of a separate co-op mode.

Physical gestures instead of a pure dialogue menu

Summer Eternal describes a world in which ordinary actions such as closing a door, flipping light switches, inventory and tool use are meant to work through tangible movements rather than exclusively through text menus. Objects have mass and inertia, and rooms are meant to react to manipulation.

The developers explicitly mention the ability not only to move urban objects but also to set them on fire. The team has not yet concretely demonstrated whether this creates free solutions for every task. For now, the physics simulation remains a declared design principle.

A second setting lies in Redrick's head

Dealing with people is only one layer of Red Rooster. Redrick is also meant to face, in a strange inner space of imagination, the contradictory parts of his personality. The studio calls this mental space the Chicken Coop.

The story thus places external investigation and inner conflicts side by side. The concept page describes branching conversations and the world's reactions to decisions as goals. A specific stat, class or combat system has not yet been fully presented.

RPG tradition and immersive sim influences

As narrative influences, Summer Eternal names Planescape: Torment, Arcanum and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, among others. For physical interaction, the team points to Exanima, Dark Messiah of Might and Magic and Larian's Divinity games.

The references show the intended direction, but do not guarantee specific systems or how they will be implemented in the final product. The studio positions the project as a standalone world, not as a sequel or licensed spin-off of any of these games.

Summer Eternal develops a new RPG world

Summer Eternal is an independent studio with several former contributors to Disco Elysium on board. The group was formed in 2024 and works with a model that is meant to give staff and players shares in the studio structure.

Red Rooster belongs to a new fictional world, for which the team is developing its own characters, locations, music and concept art. Earlier projects by individual members are biographical context, but neither a confirmed connection between the game worlds nor an official sequel to Disco Elysium.

Concept art and early prototypes

The project page shows character drawings, city views and depictions of individual motifs. Summer Eternal explicitly labels the excerpts from early game builds as prototype material. They should not be read as finished console gameplay.

The accompanying anthology, around 500 pages, also documents design decisions, characters and illustrations. It is background material on development and not a separately released game or content DLC.
