Soulframe

Soulframe is a fantasy action RPG from Digital Extremes. As an Envoy, you travel through the world of Midrath, shaped by nature, spirits and ancient conflicts. Instead of focusing solely on fast ranged combat, Soulframe deliberately combines melee combat, magic, exploration and the bond with so-called Omen Beasts.

The game is still in the Preludes phase, a continuously expanded pre-alpha. Digital Extremes is developing content, systems and the world further together with the community before Soulframe is released more widely later.

Digital Extremes first publicly presented Soulframe at TennoCon on July 16, 2022. There is still no date for the full release. Instead, development runs through the Preludes pre-alpha, which regularly receives new areas, systems, enemies and gameplay mechanics.

On September 18, 2026, Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound was released. The update expands the world with wolf pups as companions, fishing, dynamic weather, Shrine matchmaking, new weapons and a reworked Temper system, among other things. The Steam version is announced, but is still listed there only as “Coming soon”.

The current Preludes version runs on PC via Soulframe's own website. A Steam version is already listed, but not yet released. Digital Extremes names consoles as a long-term goal for a later, more complete release, but currently confirms neither PS5 nor Xbox Series dates.

For this reason, only the released PC version is currently available. Unreleased console drafts are not presented as available versions.

Soulframe combines melee weapons, magic and so-called Virtues with Pacts to Omen Beasts. Depending on equipment and bonds, different combat styles can be built. Many features can be played solo, while Soulframe also supports cooperative sessions with other Envoys.

Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound significantly expands these systems. A wolf pup can be fed, trained and taken along on explorations; its behaviour develops depending on how you play with it. While fishing, you can catch fish, while dynamic weather directly affects gameplay for the first time: rain can boost organic resources, and thunderstorms strengthen Voltaic Magick.

In addition, there are Shrine matchmaking at Revive Shrines, new weapons and armour, and a reworked Temper system. Weapons can be dismantled to learn their Tempers and then transfer them more precisely to other equipment.

In its current development phase, Soulframe has no classic DLC structure. New content appears within the ongoing Preludes updates. Preludes 16: Of Hook & Hound is accordingly a development update and not a separately sold add-on.

Digital Extremes is using these updates to rework existing systems and introduce new mechanics. For example, the wolf pups from Preludes 16 are also meant to lay the groundwork for later mount systems, although no binding release date has been announced for this.

The Steam page currently lists for PC at least Windows 7 64-bit, an Intel Core i7-860/Core i5-750 or AMD FX-4100 with SSE 4.2, 8 GB RAM, a DirectX 11-compatible graphics card, broadband internet and 50 GB storage. Since Soulframe is still in development and the Steam version has not yet been released, these details may change before the wider launch.

In addition: the current Steam client no longer supports Windows 7 itself. The system information is therefore documented here as the minimum requirement currently listed on the product page, not as a recommendation for a current Steam system.
