What is Warframe?

Warframe is a free-to-play third-person action RPG and looter shooter from Digital Extremes. As a Tenno, you pilot biomechanical Warframes, each with its own abilities, and fight your way through the sprawling Origin System. The game combines fast gunfights and melee with parkour, deep build systems, story quests and cooperative missions.

Warframe has been continuously expanded for years. New Warframes, weapons, locations, quests and major system updates regularly change the game without turning it into a separate sequel.

Gameplay

The core of Warframe is the interplay of Warframe abilities, firearms, melee combat and parkour. Bullet Jumps, Slides and wall maneuvers make movement a central part of combat. Each Warframe comes with its own ability set and can be heavily specialized through Mods, weapons and gear.

Missions can be played solo or in online co-op. Alongside classic corridor missions there are larger open areas, resource and crafting systems, and long quest chains that continue the story of the Tenno, the Lotus and the Origin System.

Tau Prologue: new story and playable Lotus

The Tau Prologue becomes permanently available in the Quest Codex from Oct 15, 2026. It sets up Warframe's next major story chapter in the Tau system. To access it, you must have completed the story quests Die Hex and Der Alte Frieden.

Digital Extremes ties the prologue to a playable sequence with the Lotus and the Vessel, which can be used for the first time and was designed earlier. On Eris there is a dedicated section with a big battle against Infested. The quest stays accessible after the companion community operation ends.

The one-time Epic Operation: Toward Tau is separate from this: new players can take part as early as after Vors Preis. Its time-limited dialogue and rewards are not a requirement for the permanent Tau Prologue.
